. Hearing Them Talk Indiana cannot complain . this year that she had no opportunity of hearing big men talk. All of them of course, are talking politics. All of them are urging us to vote either for the Democratic or the Republican cause. All of them can see no virtue in the other side. All of them are indulging in superlatives and exaggerations. But on the other hand, all of us can take what they say with a grain of salt. All of us can search for the truth in what they say. All of us can go to the polls on election day, and all of us can vote just exactly as we want to cast our ballots, so after all the big advantage is with each of us.
Von Kluck's Retirement Field Marshal Alexander H. R. von Kluck, who commanded the right wing of the German army in its sweep toward Paris in 1914. has been placed on the retired list at his own request. His failure is one of the mysteries of the war. That he was driven back in the Battle of the Marne is history, but why German military strategy was not able to foresee this calamity has not been explained. Whether von Kluck was to blame;
whether some one else blundered; whether the real elements of modern warfare were too little understood in those early hours of the campaign; whether he really executed what he was ordered to do all these are questions that will not be answered until the war is over and the historian has had time and opportunity to weigh everything in the balance. - Von Kluck is one of the tragedies of the war. At the outset he swept everything before him. It seemed certain that German arms would crush the army of France and sweep toward Paris. Then the Allies braced and yon Kluck was hurled back in defeat. Whether the Kaiser reprimanded him ; whether the German nation lost faith in him after his defeat, are things we do not know. That defeat did not destroy his courage is attested to by the wounds he received when he recklessly exposed himself while examining advanced positions along the German line.
Piffle The House of Commons has passed the second reading of the Rhodes estate bill, which would exclude Germans henceforth from enjoying scholarships at Oxford university under the Cecil Rhodes trust funds. Piffle best describes the action. German students after the war will be seeding education not, destruction when they try to enter English universities. It may take a couple of decades before England removes the new restrictions, but when she does, she will be ashamed of an act done in, the heat of prejudice and in an hour when passions were unduly aroused. And at that, German scholarship will not be destroyed after the war, even if the Kaiser does lose his crown and Germany many of her rights.
