DIARY RELATES STORY OF CLAY'S VISIT TO WAYNE
In the diary of ttllja HackUman. which is being displayed at the Gen tennlal celebration In Indianapolis, a complete account of Henry Clay's visit to Richmond, October, 1842, is given. Mr. Hacltleman was a member of the candidate's party as a press representative. The account follows: From Dayton Clay's party continued their travel to the state line, reaching there at 8 o'clock, October 7, where Mr. Clay was met by the Indiana state's committee -of reception, and was escoVted to Richmond, where he made a speech. It was here that the abolitionists, under the leadership of a Mr. Mendenhall, of Raldolph county, presented to Mr. Clay a petition, asking him to liberate his (Henry Clay's) slaves." Mr. Clay said he did not think this a proper time to present to him such a petition, as he had no time to give it due deliberation, and that for the last 'thirty years his residence was known to be at Lexington, Ky., where they would at any time be cordially received and due attention be given to any proposition they cared to
make; that on this occasion he was only a guest on his first visit to our state, and that while he deplored slavery as much as any man in the Union, he did not see very clearly why he should be selected from among all the (slave-holders of the south to make this sacrifice. Promised to Consider Matter He said, however, he would consider the matter, and should he agree to the proposition he would request. Mr. Mendenhall to make a donation to the manumitted slaves, the full amount of their appraised value, about $15,000, fur their special benefit, and he (Clay) would make ' a like donation, which would be enough to keep bis fifty e laves as comfortably as he was then keeping them; in the meantime," however, he would advise Mr. Mendenhall to attend to' his own business. Mr. Mendenhall . seemed not to wish to shoulder , IJie responsibility of caring for any of the' slaves, but took Mr. Clay's advice and retired from the meeting.

and Strength," Says Capital City Woman
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Oct. 13. Mrs. s P. nubv. wife of a machinist who
lives at 2002 Ralston avenue, this city. J
Rave a statement on April is regarding relief she gained through use of Tanlac, the celebrated medicine that has become so popular in Richmond. "For several months I have been in a weakened and run down condition," Mrs. Ruby said. "I felt tired and worn out all the time and I wasn't sufficiently strong to do my work, I was losing weight constantly. Indigestion bothered me and I didn't seem to get the proper nutrition from my food. There were very few things I could eat. "My father who lives in Kokomo had tried Tanlac and he advised me to take it. I feel a great deal stronger since trying Tanlac. I'm able to do my work now. My food has the right taste and heenis to be doing me some good. I'm gaining weight.
"I recommend Tanlac because it has been a wonderful help to me." "A general run down condition of the system," said the Tanlac 'Man, "is most easily detected by the tired, worn out feeling Mrs. Ruby describes and which thousands of people complain of. Tanlac is just the medicine In ' such cases. It tones up every organ of the body; assists digestion and produces vim, vigor, energy. Tanlac also is fine for stomach, liver and kidney trouble, catarrhal complaints, rheumatism, nervousness, and the like." Tanlac is now being introduced in Richmond at the Sixth and Main streets store of Clem Thistlethwaite, where a special Tanlac representative
is explaining the new medicine to the public dally. It also may be obtained at Thistlethwaite's other stores., 914 Main, 16th and Main, N. 8th and E streets. S. 8th and E.Adv.
