FRIENDS HONOR STATE'S BIRTH WITH SERVICE

Interesting Quaker history showing the important place Friends occupied in forming and maintaining the moral structure of the section was given at South Eighth Street Friends church Sunday by Rev. Francis C. Anacombe as part of a centennial program observed in Friends churches. The old northwest territory was opened by a Quaker, Daniel Boone, Rev. Mr. Anscombe said, and many of Indiana and Ohio's early settlers were the highest type of Quakers whose consciences forced them to leave the Soutli in 1793 and settle in the North to form new communities to fight slavery. In 18S0 there were six settlements of Friends in Ohio and the migration from the South became general after 1803 when the Quaker rrophet. Zachariah Dicks, predicted the Civil war. Settle Here in 1806. The first settlement of Quaker record in Richmond was In 1806 when the territory was part of the Miami . monthly meeting in Ohio. Two of its members, John Smith and Jeremiah 1 Cox are said to have founded Rich- . mond. Whitewater monthly meeting was formed in 1809 and Friends had ? regular meetings 15 years before any . ether denominations, Rev. Anscombe ' said. 'I He spoke of -the. important part Friends had in the constitutional convention, David Hoover being a mem- ? ber, a state senator for six years, and K a leader for moral rights. Friends near Richmond were so active against slavery that one is said to have expressed shame that he had assisted ;only 2,700 negroes to ecape via .the ''underground railroad," Rev. Ans i combe said. Another assisted 3,000. Lead In Education. 7: The Friends lad educational move-

' ments through a period of opposition 'i to free schools or to any schools at 4 all. Rev. Anscombe said. Earlham "college was conceived in 1832, and i was realized in 1847. It was the third i school in the country to give women j equal standing with men. Schools in connection with monthly meeting and ' were common and soon 12 high schools ;! or higher institutions of learning had been established in the state. Friends have led in temperance and ' prison reforms. The Baxter Law, the Nichoison law and the Indiana local option law were fathered by Quakers ; nnd passed through the influence of ' Friends. The organization of the : state board of charities is the result : of Friends' activities, Rev. 'Anscombe taid. Reviews Coffin's Work ) B. Gurney Hill reviewed the work :of Charles F. Coffin in connection -with Kasthsven Hospital for insane. J Mrs. Allen D. Hole and Mrs. Benjamin ;.Tohnson spoke briefly on historical ; matters. I The church and Sunday school grooms were filled for the rally day

and centennial program. Many per

sons were able to attend by accepting the proffer of automobiles to carry them to the meetins. At West Richmond Friends church a similar program was given. Rev. Charles M. Woodman reviewed the opening chapters of Quakerism in Indiana, and James Unthank read a paper on "What Quakers Have Contributed Toward the Making of Indiana." The history of West Richmond Friends church was given at a vesper service in the afternoon. A big attendance greeted centennial celebration speakers at East Main Street Friends church. Rev. Milo S. Illnckle made the chief centennial address, dealing with the relation of Quaker meetings and individual Quakers with the upbuilding of moral laws and institutions in the state. Members of the church mentioned incidents within the memory of living Quakers in which the influence of Friends had a bearing.

JTS rather interesting to note that the men with the high foreheads, the keen eyes and the genuinely cultured demeanor, always prefer custom tailored, made to measure clothes.

To such men, price is usually not a consideration they buy what they like and want regardless of its price they find that custom tailoring suits them perfectly.

But even to men to whom price U a consideration, cus-. torn tailoring is now available we've combined all its advantages with the additional attraction of unusual value.
