Tabby was a street cat and one day she wandered a long way from the city where she had always lived to a

; farmhouse in the country.

Now, Tabby had always stolen all she ever had, and when the farmer's little gir picked up poor Tabby she scratched and tried to run away. The little girl knew how to. hold

her without being scratched, and 6he

iook ner into the Kitcnen ana gave Tabby a saucer of milk. Tabby had never in all her life had any milk given to her. She had tasted it and liked it, for she had tipped over many milk bottles and then lapped up the milk; but to have it given to her Tabby could not believe was possible. So she ran under a chair and waited until the little girl went into the pantry, and then Tabby darted for the saucer and drank the milk almost at one lap. to sleep in the kitchen on a soft piece That night Tabby was given a place of blanket, but Tabby had never slept in the house, and she tried to get out, thinking that something bad surely would happen to her if she stayed indoors. So when the house was stiU Tabby was still awake looking for a place of escape, and while she was looking she got into the pantry and on a shelf. Of course she smelled something good, and Tat by poked her nose around until she found the dish that held it She poked off the cover, and there she found a piece of chicken. Tabby did not know what it was, but she knew it was good to eat, and she ate it, and then she tried harder than before to get out of doors. By and by she found the pantry window, which was open, and out she lumped into the yard and crawled under the steps and went to sleep. In the morning the little girl found the cook very angry and looking for Tabby with a stick in her hand, but the little girl begged so hard that the cook said she would not punish Tabby, but that if she ever stole anything again she would certainly whip her. That morning when Tabby crawled out from under the steps the little girl was calling and had a saucer of milk and cream, and after a while Tabby went to her and drank the milk.

Good Old Home-Made Family Cough Remedy

; Much Eettr than the Ready-Made j ! Kind Efsily and Cheaply ! Prepared I

If you combined the curative propertics of every known "ready-made" coujrh remedy, you would hardly have in thorn all the curative power that 1K in this simple "home-made" cough syrup which takes only a few minutes to prepare. Cot from any druggist 21 ounces of Pinrx (50 cents worth), pour it into a pint bottle and fill th- bottle with plain cranulated 6Ugar syrup. The total cost is about 54 cents and gives you a full pint of really better cough syrup than you could buy ready-made for $2.50. Tastes pleasant and never spoils. This Pinex and sugar syrup preparation gets right at the cause of a cough and gives immediate relief. It loosens the phlegm, stops the nasty throat tickle nd heals the sore, irritated membranes that line the throat, chest and bronchial tubes, so gently and easily that it is really astonishing. A day's use will usually overcome the ordinary cough and for bronchitis, croup, whooping cough and bronchial asthma, there is nothing better. Pinex Is a most valuable concentrated compound of genuine Norway pine extract, combined with guaiacol and has been used for generations to break up severe coughs. To avoid disappointment, be sure to ask your druggist for "2'z ounces of Pinex" with full directions, and don't accept anything else. A guarantee of absolute satisfaction or money promptly refunded, goes with this preparation. The Pinex Co., Ft. Wayne, Ind. ,

but she kept one eye on the door of the house, for she knew she had stolen the nice supper she had late in the night and 6he expected to be whipped for it. But Tabby went to sleep in the sun and no one punished her, and at dinner time she was given more milk and again she went to sleep. Another saucer of milk at night made Tabby feel she was liked very much by the little girl, and she let her take her in her arms without trying to scratch her. Then the little girl took Tabby in the house and put a red ribbon loosely around her neck, and Tabby began to feel quite important: she washed her face and paws and slicked up her black coat until she looked quite like a well-bred cat. - Then she took Tabby to the closet door and shook her finger at Tabby. "No, you must not go in there," she cautioned Tabby: "You must go to sleep and catch mice if you see any." Of course Tabby did not understand what the little girl said, but she knew she was not to go into the pantry because the door was closed that night and she could not get in. After a while the little girl coaxed the cook to leave the pantry door open at night and Tabby began to catch the rnice that ran about sometimes and bothered the cook, nibbling things in the pantry.
