EATON FAIR OPENS WITH FAST EVENTS ON PREBLE TRACK

EATON, O., Sept 27. Preble county's sixty-sixth annual fair was formally opened Tuesday and a crowd estimated at 6,000 was in attendance. All details have been completed and nothing save favorable weather is needed to make the event the greatest in the history of the agricultural society. ' The first events on the race track were held Tuesday. One was a 2:13 pace for a purse of $300 and the other was a ladies' hitching and driving race for moneys divided $16,' $10 and $5. Entrants were required to bring their horses on to the track .with nothing but a halter on, harness them, hitch them to a four-wheeled vehicle and drive a one-half mile heat. Miss Edna Mann, of this city, demonstrated her ability to hitch up her horse, but was sadly outclarsed when it came to speed. The summaries follow: The 2: 13 Pace, Puree $300. Harriman has transferred the Arden house to her son, William Averell Harriman, together with the 2,500 acres surrounding It. The entire estate Is valued at more than $5,000,000. The deed is dated Aug. 3, 1916, but was not placed on record In the County Clerk's office in Goshen until last week. It is said to represent the largest single real estate transaction in the history of Orange county. W. Averell Harriman, 24 years old, was married to Miss Kitty Lanier Lawrence, of Lenox, Mass., Sept. 21, 1915. Since his marraige he has been living in a wing of the building constructed for him. The estate is situated on the threshold of the Hudson Highlands and represents one of the accomplishments of E. H. Harrlman'a life in which he took his greatest pride and delight. It was uncompleted at the time of his death, but since then has been finished In accordance with the plans and designs which were prepared under his direction. The architecture of the house is of the French Renaissance The entire building contains more than 150 rooms and stands on a

REV. BLACKFORD INJURED WHEN HORSE RUNS AWAY

ELDORADO, O., Sept. 27. Rev. J. H. Blackford was painfully Injured Friday night when he was thrown from a buggy when his horse took fright at a passing motor truck. The Rev. Mr. Blackford was returning from the home of Frank Blackford, east of town, when the accident occurred. The horse broke loose from the buggy and ran into town before It was caught.

DR. FOX RETURNS FROM CANAL ZONE

HAGERSTOWN, Ind., Sept. 27. Mr. and Mrs. George Jones are entertaining their daughter and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Roy Fox. They arrived Saturday from Panama, where they have been located several months, and where the doctor was engaged in hospital work for the government. They resided at Panama City and his position required his services also in Balboa. From the latter city they sailed for New York City, arriving there on Wednesday after having been on the water six days and, nights. They spent a few days last week at Dayton with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Fox and went to Indianapolis yesterday to buy an automobile. Dr. Fox's work will be at Washington D. C, for awhile and he will leave for there Oct. 1. Mrs. Fox will go to Washington later.

CONTRACT LABOR PLAN WILL BE ABOLISHED

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Sept. 27. The contract labor system will be abolished in the state penal institutions. Governor Ralston announced that late today he would meet members of the state board of charities and wardens of the prisons to consider the adoption of a new system. About fifty percent of the convicts are employed under the contract labor system, by which manufacturers pay

Mr. and Mrs. William Schobin and family of Brookville, have moved here and occupy Theo. Voorhees' tenant property. Mr. Schobin works at Connersville and makes the trip in his auto. He also accommodates Vernon Hess and C. C. Ellis who are working there.. . .Miss Ethel Park, of Indianapolis, was the guest of Mrs. Henry Hoffmann and family Monday and over night Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Doddy, of Cambridge City, spent Sunday with Mr. Doddy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Doddy. While here Mrs. Doddy fell down the cellar way and was severely hurf Miss Jessie Shean, who was the guest of Mrs. Anna Hoshour and family, returned to Peoria, Illinois, Tuesday. Miss Shean is a friend of Harry Hoshour, who is home from Peoria on vacation. A rumor was circulated that the young people were married and the boys gave them a serenade on Monday night. . The story was untrue.

AGED CHURCHMAN DIES

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Sept. 27. Thomas N. Faris, widely known in the United Presbyterian church, died today. He gave $10,000 to the United Presbyterian mission here last Christmas day.

EXAMINER RETURNS

W. H. Glidewell. Webster, field examiner for the State Board of Accounts, returned to his work examining the books at the county treasurer's office today. He has been away two weeks at the bedside of his wife who underwent a serious operation at Brazil.
