Caring for the Soldiers The United States government long ago discarded the idea that the army was a reformatory for wayward boys and men who were good-for-nothings. Recruiting sergeants are forced to see that the applicant for the service has a testimonial showing his good character. Along with these reforms came an effort to train the men who were soldiering for some vocation so that when they were honorably discharged they would be able to re-enter civilian life without a great handicap. Recruiting sergeants now are charged not only with enlisting men for the service, but also with obtaining positions for them after they have been discharged. The United States army may not be a model in point of military efficiency, but these facts stand out prominently the men are the best paid and best treated collection of men doing military work in the world.
Watching the Safety Boxes We believed until lately that safety deposit boxes were places in which to keep valuables honorably earned and obtained. It never entered our
mind that criminals might hire these boxes as safe depositories for their wealth, but such is being done, according to press dispatches from Chicago. More than $130,000 of the $271,000 loot stolen from the Westminster branch of the Bank of Montreal in 1912 is said to be hidden in safety deposit boxes in Chicago. Secret service men are said to be watching these boxes to catch the depositors. ' Your Brain Box It was Solomon who said, "For as he thinketh within himself, so is he." The wise king of the Jews meant to say that a man's whole life is shaped by, his thinking capacity and his thinking direction. If a man habitually thinks evil, his life ultimately will reflect evil. If a man has the power of analysis and synthesis and applies it, his thinking ability will be shown in his business enterprise and success. The world is made up largely of men who do not think. Few persons -will give deep thought to a problem or to their lives. They do not know how to think. Some are driven to think by sheer necessity. Others are made to think by some misfortune. But as a general rule, few persons think. If every one thought deeply and correctly, thousands of problems that today are unsolved would be cleared up. Many an endeavor would be realized if the men back of it had given consistent thought to the enterprise. Many a municipal problem would have been solved easily if the men in authority had worked their brain box. The world is moved by thought and not by bluster and noise.

"The one with the three fingers!
Yes! That's the man'" whispered the
Doctor, hoarsely.
"That's Mac Alarney." Blaine pressed the electric bell again, and their own car lunged forward In a spurt of
speed which left the other hopelessly behind, although it was manifestly making desperate efforts to overtake
and pass them.
"Do you suppose he suspected our
errand?" the Doctor asked. "Suspected? Lord bless wou, man, he knows! He had already passed the
two open cars full of my men, and the ambulance. He'd give ten years of
his life to beat us out and reach his place ahead of us tonight but he hasn't a chance in the world unless we blow out a tire, and if we do we'll all go back in the ambulance together, what's left of us!" Even as he spoke, there came a swift change in the even drone of their engine, a jarring, discordant note, slight but unmistakable, and a series of irregular thudding knocks. "One of the cylinder's missing, sir." Ross turned to the detective, and spoke with eager anxiety. "We'll make it on five." The quiet confidence in Blaine's voice, with its underlying note of grim, indomitable determination, seemed to communicate itself to the other men, and no further word was said, although" they all heard the thunder of the approaching car behind. The doctor restrained with difficulty the Impulse to look backward, and instead kept his eyes sternly fixed upon the trees and hedge-rows flying past, more sharply defined shadows in the lesser dark. Then, all at once, the shriek of a locomotive burst upon his ears, and the roar and rattle of a train going over a trestle. "The railroad bridge!" he cried excitedly. "We're there, Mr. Blaine!" The noise of the passing train had scarcely died away, when from Just behind them the hideous shriek of Mac Alarney's motor-horn rose blastingly three times up the night air. the last fainter than the others, as if
the pursuing car had dropped back. "He's beaten! He couldn't keep up the pace, much less better it," Blaine remarked. "Those three blasts sound
ed a warning to the guards of the re
treat. It was probably a signal agreed upon in case of danger. We're In for it now!' They swerved abruptly, between two
high stone gate-posts, and up a broad sweep of graveled driveway. Lights gleamed suddenly in the windows of the hitherto darkened house, which loomed up gaunt and squarely defined against the sullen sky. "Your men, in the other cars " Doctor Alwyn stammered, as they came to a crunching stop before the door. "Will they arrive in time to be of service? Mac Alarney will reach here first " "My men will be at his heels," returned Blaine, shortly. "They held back purposely, acting under my instructions. Come on now." He sprang from the car and up the steps, and the Doctor found himself following, with Ross and Suraci on either side. The driver turned their car around and ran it upon the lawn, its searchlight trained on the circling drive, its engine throbbing like the throat of an impatient horse. In' response to( the detective's vigorous ring, the door was opened by a
short, stocky man, at sight of whom the Doctor gave a start of surprise,

muscles of his shoulders and arms were plainly visible.
"Hello, Al!" exclaimed" Blaine, briskly. The veins on the thick bull neck seemed to swell, but there was no sign of recognition in the stolid jaw. Only the lower lip protruded as the
man set his jaw, and the little, close set, porcine eyes narrowed. "You were a rubber at the Hoff
meister Baths the last time I saw you," went on the detective, smoothly, as he deftly inserted his foot between the door and jamb. "You remember me, of course. I'm Henry Blaine. My friends and I have come here tonight
on a confidential errand, and I'd like a word in private with you." The man he called "Al" muttered something which sounded like a disclaimer. Then he caught sight of the Doctor's face over Blaine's shoulder, and a spasm of black rage seized him. "Oh, it's you, is it? You've snitched, d n you! I'll do for you, for this!" To Be Continued.

We are so used to thinking of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound as a remedy exclusively for female ills that we are apt to overlook the fact that it Js one of the best remedies for disorders of the 6tomach. For stomach trouble of women It is especially adapted, as it works in complete harmony with the female organism, since it contains the extracts of the best tonic roots and herbs. It tones up the digestive system, and increases the appetite and strength. Here is what one woman writes showing what this medicine does: Newfield, N. Y. "I am so pleased to say I can recommend Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound as an economical and beneficial remedy in most ailments pertaining to women. At least I found it so by only taking two bottles. I bad indigestion in a bad form and I am now feeling in the best of health and owe it all to Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound." Siver Gram Spruce
From the Pine-Clad Hills oi the Adirondack Mountain
Region is used for the Sounding Board Throat and Horn of the Starr Phonograph. The wonderful resonant and sonorous qualities of spruce have been recognized by science for over four centuries to be the best for the amplifying services of sounding boards in musical instruments. That is the reason you always find it used in the world's best violins and pianos and for the sounding board throat and horn of the Starr Phonograph.
The principle of tone production does not differ in any medium. Spruce contains to the correct degree the molecular composition which vibrates easiest in sympathy with vibrations passing along the grain of the wood itself and which is most easily affected by vibrations in the atmosphere. When the tone vibrations enter the throat and horn they are enlarged and the full resonance and sonority of spruce throw them into the air with all the strength, sweetness and purity of the original. No other phonograph can do this. There Is an entire elimination of all shrill, harsh qualities which have heretofore been so disappointing to the cultured ear. The Starr Piano company's fifty years practical experience In tone building now applied in the Starr Phonograph has made It equalled by none. The Starr easily demonstrates its superiority of tone over all others. If this were its only feature it would be worthy of your most careful consideration but its other exclusive qualities make It an instrumenet of undeniable superiority throughout
A demonstration will thoroughly convince you. A Starr can be placed in your home upon the easiest terms and your satisfaction is absolutely guaranteed. Hear the October Starr Records Now on Sale
