BRAFFETT WINS MATCH IN CLUB GOLF TOURNEY

Clever play and keen competition featured the week-end sessioning on the green of the Country club. With the completing of the qualifying rounds in both the championship and cup lists over Saturday and Sunday and with the playing of the first round of match play in the championship division completed yesterday, a decided narrowing of the entry list has been recorded. The feature match of the first round in the championship series yesterday was the victory of Braffett over Poundstone after a clever drive. With four down at the end of nine holes, Poundstone came back strong and squared the contest on the eighteenth green where he held a twenty foot "birdie" three. The first three extra holes were halved in, 4-5-6, and then Braffett gained his victory by halving out a .mashie pitch on the fourth hole. Comstock Forces Spangler. The Comstock-Spangler flight was another of the sensational variety i uomsiocK iorcea spangier 10 go 10 me twentieth hole to win. The balance of the first round matches were onesided. Results of the first round of match play: Elmer defeated Dill, 5 up 3. Spangler defeated Comstock, 1 up, twenty holes. Sprague defeated Seidel, 5 up 4. S. Smith, defeated Swayne, 4 up 3. TUBBY BACK "Tubby" Spencer has returned. Some months ago big league scouts were tipped that a "youth" named Spencer was performing wonders in the backstopping department for the Vernon (Cal.) club. Hughle Jennings hustled out a scout, who shortly re ported: "This 'youngster' is none other than Tubby Spencer." Hughie fired back a message saying: "If Tubby really is on his good behavior and is doing good work, grab him quickly." Whereupon, Tubby was grabbed. Now he's doing chores for the Ti gers, and the way he is doing them has elicited applause even from hos tile stands. Likewise, the all-around CINCINNATI RACE TOLD BY FIGURES Winner John D. Aitken. Murray, IN MAJORS play of Spencer is aiding the Jungaleers In the pennant fight Quite a number of years ago, Spencer fought for the Brownies and he was a star. Later he hooked on with the Red Sox and the Phillies. But Tubby became so fat that he looked and acted like and elephant when he lumbered upon the field. Also, Tubby wasn't making any strenuous efforts to keep in shape So Tubby was shunted off to the minors. Lower and lower he dropped. For a time he was out of baseball. Then he decided that was going to show up a few of the folks who called his a has-been. Tubby went into training, corrected his ways and at last worked himself into a job with the Vernon club. And now he is back in the big league, and something of a sensation because of his batting, throwing and his receiving work. BOOKS Y. M. I. TEAM. CENTERVILLE, Ind., Sept. 5. H. C. Are Medicines Liquors? A certain class of prejudiced and jealous doctors call patent medicines only alcoholic beverages. They will tell you that such and such a medicine contains as much alcohol a3 a glass of beer or a certain quantity of j whiskey; but they no nor. mention mat the beer or whiskey is swallowed at one draught, while only a small quantity of the medicine is taken at one dose. At the same time they will use aliohol quite as freely and many in four or five times as great proportions in their own prescriptions. Such standard remedies as Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound use barely enough alcohol to preserve the root and herb extractives, too little to have injurious effects, and the medi cine can be had, if desired, in a nonalcoholic form.
