county funds in good condition says bowman

Auditor Bowman reported to the county council this morning that the finances of the county for this year are in good condition. On June 30 there was $52,910 In the general fund to last the remainder of the year. The only large account which must be

met Is about $9,000 for election and

registration expenses.

Is $86,296.71 in the South Side bridge fund, only $54,296.71 of this is in the bank. The remainder has been loaned to other county funds. By the time this money is needed, however It will all have been paid back. Poor Farm Prospers. He reported that the poor farm was in especially good condition. The poor farm, under Mr. Petro's supervision, is becoming a better paying proposition every year. In 1913, before Petro took charge, tht farm brought about $1,500 into the county treasury. When the superintendent, Petro, took charge in 1914, products from it brought $3,548 into the treasury. In 1915 it netted the county $5,058.22, and from all indications it will bring in this , amount this year. Up to date Mr. Petro has paid in $3,500. It was pointed out that the delinquent tax collections are Increasing each year since a new system of bookkeeping has been instituted and since these taxes are no longer put In the

profit and loss columns. In 1912 only

$17,000 delinquent taxes were col

lected. Collections Increased. This amount of collections has in

creased yearly until from indications

it win be about $30,000 this year. Al

added to the amount to be collected and the county is four ber cent, gainer. Each year proportional per centage is added to the delinquent taxes until paid.

GREECE WILL SIDE WITH ALLIED ARMY

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5. The state department received a cable from an official in the Balkans whose identity was kept secret saying that he had been officially informed by the government that Greece would enter war within two days on the side of the allies.

EXECUTIVE SESSION TAKES UP HOSPITAL

Just before the board of county commissioners this afternoon prepared to adjourn after drafting estimates for the 1917 budget, to be submitted to the county council, W. H. Romey, representing the public health committee of the Richmond Commercial club, asked the board to go into executive session with him for the purpose of considering the incorporation of an appropriation for a tuberculosis hospital in the budget. The request was granted. The board had previously decided not to recommend such an appropriation. Mr. Romey -said that an appropriation of any amount would be satisfactory.

RECORD LAND TRANSFER.

SENATE TO RATIFY PURCHASE TREATY

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5. The senate

foreign relations committee voted un animously. today to recommend ratlfl

cation at this session of congress of

the Danish treaty, providing for the

purchase of the Dutch West Indies for $25,000,000. It is doubtful however whether the treaty can be pushed through at this session of congress.

SCHOOL RECORD SET

From reports which have come to the office of County Superintendent Williams, the enrollments in the various township schools yesterday will 6et a new record for Wayne county. Trustee Edgerton said today that there was a very large increase in the enrollments in Wayne township.

The largest real estate transaction in Richmond for this month was recorded today. The sale involved $7000 which was paid by Ruth Churchell to Margaret Lawrence for lot 54, E. Mendenhall and Coffin's addition.

Judging on the Richmond better

baby contest opened today in the offices of the Central Charities bureau.

Babies of all complexions and dispositions, but every one of them fine

specimens, according to the medical men who are inspecting them, were brought before the examiners by proud, smiling mothers. ' In the receiving room decorations of flowers and flags had been placed, and a display case had been put up by local merchants, advertising furnishings for babies. There is still room for other display cases, and these probably will be installed. At 2 o'clock twenty-two babies had been examined. Eight physicians are acting as examiners during the course of the day. By 5 o'clock tonight fifty babies will have been examined. Judging will continue until Saturday nifrht. A total of 173 babies has been entered. ' . .

ROBBINS PROTESTS BRIDGE CONDITION

Mayor Robbins appeared before the board of public works today and protested over the condition of the temporary bridge, put up a year ago to replace the condemned Main street bridge. He said the floor of the temporary bridge was in an unsafe condition. The board will provide a new flooring and two and a half inch planks. "The bridge was swung so low that

the floor is constantly being rotted by

water which flows down the streets

leading to it," Street Commissioner

Knollenberg explained.

SUIT MAY DELAY SOUTH SIDE SPAN

, When the appropriation of $185,000 for the proposed South G Btreet bridge came before the county commissioners this afternoon, Gus Hoelscher, county attorney, argued that the appropriation of that amount would be illegal, inasmuch as there is an appeal from the board of public works now pending in the circuit court concerning the building of the bridge. Such an appropriation would have to be conditional, and conditional appropriations are illegal, Attorney Hoelscher contends. In case the appropriations for the South G street bridge and the Main street bridge are made, they will not be paid until January 1, 1917.

PLANS FOR EXHIBIT

Weights and Measures Inspector McKinley informed Secretary'Haas of the Commercial club today that he would arrange an exhibit of condemned weights and measures for the fall festival. He said he wanted to show the public the work of his department and the importance of constant testing of weights and measures to protect the public from fraud.

CLEVELAND PAPERS RAISE , PRICE TO TWO CENTS

Meliss Weeks, of Chester, Mass., age seventy, only recently became the owner of the first "store hat" she ever wore. The, "creation" was given her by the selectmen of the town.

CLEVELAND, Sept. 5. Effective Monday, Cleveland's two English morning dailies, the Leader and Plain Dealer, were sold for 2 cents instead of 1 cent everywhere outside of Cleveland and Cuyahoga county. The price of the two afternoonf dailies, the News and the Press, has been raised to two cents everywhere except in the city and adjacent counties. Increased paper cost is given as the reason for the advances.

ONE BID RECEIVED FOR WEATHER SYSTEM

POTATOES REMAIN UP

Potatoes, forced by speculation in the face of the threatened railroad strike, from $1.75 to 42.25 a bushel last week, continue to hold their high quotation today. The shortness of the local crop, and the fact that potatoes throughout the United States have not been dug yet. make it probable that they will remain high untU Michigan potatoes come on the market. Wheat, which fell from $1.45 to $1.40 a bushel two weeks ago, holds steady at the latter price.

Because the mail was not delivered at the court house today, only one bid was received by the county commissioners for the installing of the new water heating system at the poor farm, and one for furnishing a large quantity of floor lumber to be used in repairing Wayne county bridges. The commissioners rejected both of these bids and ordered that new bids be advertized for.
