Copyright, 1916, Dy the McClure Mrs. Turkey called her family about her and told them she wanted them to listen carefully to all she was going to ,
say. "In a hole on the other side of the hill lives Mr. Fox. He is a sly fellow, and he has many fine things to say and a very smooth tongue for saying them. You must all be careful not to listen to him for he will be sure to visit the" barnyard soon, and if you do not keep out of his reach or you are foolish enough to listen to him he will surely get you and carry you off to his den over the hill." All the little turkeys looked at Mrs. Turkey with wide-open eyes, for they had never heard of Mr. Fox before. "What does he look like?" asked one."Oh, he has a bushy tail and a pointed nose, and very sharp teeth, and he smiles a great deal. "Now, my children, be careful and do not listen to him if he comes while I am away today, for I must leave you alone for a while, and don't go out of the house." The little turkeys promised they would be very careful, and Mrs. Turkey put on her bonnet and took her basket on her arm, and went to market. The little turkeys drew the latch and went upstairs to look out of the window, so they could see old Mr. Fox if he came.
Newspaper Syndicate. New York. But they saw nothing but a goat jumping and capering over the hill, and he came straight for their, house. "Oh, how funny he is!" said the little turkeys, and they all put their heads out of the window the better to see the "funny dancing goat.-" "Come out and play with me," called Mr. Goat, as he came nearer the little turkeys, "it is nice out here In the field, and I will teach you to dance." "No, we cannot come out," they answered, "mother has gone to market and we are all alone." "All the better," said Mr. Goat, "she won't know anything about it; come and dance and you can go back in the house before she comes back." "Oh! no, no; we cannot, Mr. Goat," they said. "Mother told us not to go out. She told us old Mr. Fox might get us. Did you ever see him, Mr. Goat?" "Oh! 'yes, many times," said Mr. Goat. "He is a nice fellow, too; not a bit as some people think he Is. What did your mother say about him?" "Oh! she said he was sly," answered the little turkeys, "and she said he had a smooth tongue, and that he smiled." "Well, all that is true," said Mr. Goat. "I don't see why you should be afraid of him." "But mother said he would carry us off to his den," said the little turkeys.
"And she said, too, he had very sharp teeth." Tee, that may be true," said Mr. Goat. "He eats very hard rocks and stones; nothing soft and tender, and he has to have sharp teeth, my dears. "But why talk of Mr. Fox? Come out In the fields and dance, and I will bring you back before your mother comes home." Mr. Goat danced and capered about, and the little turkeys wanted to dance, too, so down they flew right out of the window. "Now, all flap your wings, and then run this way," said Mr. Goat, dancing and jumping to show them how, and away they went into the fields. ' "What makes your legs so black?" asked one little turkey, "and what a black, pointed nose you have, Mr. Goat." i "Oh, I am that kind of a goat ; and my coat does not fit me as well as it might; but, speaking "of Mr.. Fox, wouldn't you like for me to Introduce you to him and then you need never be afraid of him again. I know him well and he never would harm any friend of mine." "Oh! mother-told us not to speak to him. I am 6ure she would not like it," said the little turkeys, huddling together. "Oh! but I am sure she would be pleased when she knew you were friends with him and there was noth
ing to fear," said Mr. Goat, and he pushed the poor little turkeys right
along before him.
Over the hill they went and no one ever saw them again, for of course it was Mr. Fox himself dressed in Mr. Goat's skin, as te knew Mrs. Turkey had gone to market and that it would be easy to fool the little turkeys, but if they had obeyed their mother they would have been there when she came
home. ' -
