Bravery at Home The world is thrilled these days with accounts

of heroism and bravery on the field of battle and

in engagements in the sky and on the sea. Men

have dared what yesterday was believed impossi

ble; heroes have sacrificed their lives with reckless abandon to protect the flags of their countries; youth and old age have vied to show the greater courage. We wonder what the effect would be if the same kind of bravery and heroism were transplanted from the military to the civil walks of life. We wonder what would result if men would show the same disregard for consequences in the 1 face of right and wrong, truth and falsehood, ' principle and expediency. -We wonder how much ; better all of us would be if thousands of men in the trenches of every day life would believe them- ; selves soldiers of truth, honor, principle, and steadfastly refuse to do that which is evil or i whose consequences might make the world sadder instead of happier. ... Transplant the heroic actions of the thousands fighting in European trenches into the lives ; of thousands of Americans, let them apply the high sense of duty and of honor of these men to the vocations in which they are engaged, and we believe the United States in six months would be thrilled with a new appreciation of the eternal 'principles of right and wrong. Not a man or a woman in this country whose outlook on life would not take on a more serious, truthful aspect, whose soul would not rebel at evil in thought, 'word and deed.

Day Nursery Work

Many women of the city are finding an opportunity to put their spare time to good use by as

sisting in an unselfish manner in the daily routine work of the Day Nursery. i The children that are left at the nursery receive the kind care and attention of the women. ' Now and then, squads of the little boys and girls who perhaps never in their lives had ridden in an automobile are taken for rides through the city and out into the country. There's no use mincing words about the good of consecrated service applied to humanity. You may call it charity, or doing your duty, or just putting in some of your extra time, the fact is that you are putting the love of God into execution among your fellow men. All of us can prate by the columns about charity, love and kindness, but the little acts.we do, such as looking after the unfortunate children at the nursery, do more good to the community and are of more benefit to the individual soul than all the exhortations ever uttered. The work done by unselfish women at the nursery is a commendable service for humanity. Not only the little one but the "doers" themselves reap the horvest. ' -'

- Cheap Promotion It cost $7,000 to discover America, according to some documents that have come to light in the archives of Genoa. These documents give the value of Columbus's fleet at $3,000. The great Admiral was paid $300 a year and the two captains who accompanied him received $200 each and the members of the crew were paid at the rate of $2.50 a month. If Columbus could come to life today and were able to take a trip across the continent he discovered, he certainly-would say that he had been underpaid for the promotion work he did. We remember the amount of salesmanship it took before Columbus was able to raise enough money for the enterprise. In executing the work, Columbus faced more discouragements than, any promoter who ever tried to put over a big deal.

Compensation for Policemen We hope that the city will not forget the heroic work of the two patrolmen who sacrificed their lives in forcing respect for the law. The deaths of these men was the worst tragedy in the history of the city and their families are entitled to compensation for the work their heads performed in the interests of the municipality. If there are any technicalities in the way of compensation they ought be swept aside and the

families ought receive the support to which they are entitled. The city officials ought not wait too long in coming to some action on the. question.

HAYE JITNEYPROBUEMsi

ELWOOD, Ind., Aug. 19. While the jitney bus problem appears to have passed In many cities it is a serious

one here. The street car company, after

being temporarily restrained from removing Its city lines in the south part of town, has notified the mayor that it will begin the removal of lines In the north part. Unregulated jitney travel is said to be the cause. An American has obtained a Cuban patent for a machine that cultivates growing sugar cane, work that heretofore has had to be done by hand.
