Copyright, 191C, Dy the McClure SWEETHEART PART I. Once upon a time there lived r.i poor peasant and his wife in a cottage on the side of a mountain, and j one night the 6tork came while they slept and brought the peasant and his wife a dear little baby girl. So dainty and sweet looking was the new baby that her parents named her Sweetheart, and the fairy queen and little fairies, peeking in at the window one night, saw the dainty little Sweetheart in her cradle, and sli was so beautiful the queen told th( fairies to enter and give the baby a Messing. "Oh, what blue eyes she has!" ss.id cne fairy, for the baby opened her big eyes as the fairies touched her with their wands, but she did not cry babies never cry when they see fairies, for they see far more than growups think or know about. "She Is as dainty and pretty as a king's daughter should be," said another fairy. "Let us make her a king's daughter," said another fairy; "we can cast that charm over the life as well as ar.y other. "Yes, that will be splendid. The dainty little girl shall become a princeEs," said all the fairies together, waving their wands as they spoke, and out they went, leaving the baby asleep, and little did her parents know what had befallen her. Sweetheart grew to be a beautiful young girl, but she lived In the cottage with her parents and was still the daughter of a poor peasant, for the fairies set no time for her to become a princess. One day while Sweetheart was working in her garden among her flowers she saw a funny little creature she knew It once was a goblin. "Come with me," he said, "and I will phow you where the prettiest flowers in all the world grow." Sweetheart loved, next to her parents, the flowers, and so without waitins to tell her parents where she was goins she followed the goblin into the weeds. Along the path he led her until all at once Sweetheart found she was in the mld6t of the woods and a p!ace she had never been before. But just as she began to be frightened the goblin said, "Here we are," nnd opened the gate to a garden where stocd a funny crooked little house, so crcckcd that it looked as if It might tumble any minute. Cut the flowers that grew in this garden were so beautiful and gorgeous that Sweetheart forgot all about the little house, and the goblin, too, for when she looked for him he had disappeared. Sweetheart began to think about gong home after she had seen all the flowers, and she was just going out of the gate when a funny, cracked voice said, "Whither away, my pretty?" Sweetheart looked around, and in the door of the crocked little house stood a funny, crooked little woman with a crocked stick in one hand on which she lear.e-i. "Come in, r.:y nrp"v." she raid to. Out from behind the door jumped the goblin.
