PLAYMATES HELP ANDERSON GIRL SPEND BIRTHDAY

CENTER VI LLE, July 31. A few of the little friends of Esther Anderson surprised her, Wednesday p. m., and helped celebrate her tenth birthday. A pleasant afternoon was spent in games, and refreshments were served by Mrs. Anderson. Those present were Virginia and Mildred Hill, Louise Moulton, Dorothy Schell, Ethel Anderson and Frances Matthews Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Ansdale and family of New Hope were entertained Sunday by Mra. King and wife Walter Clevenger . and Miss Beulah Bowers motored to Angola Saturday and visited Mildred Bowers, who la attending school at that place; from there they went to Goklwater, Mich., returning Sunday. Lashley has returned from a short visit with relatives at Newcastle Henry Farmer and wife of Williamsburg, are visiting their daughter, Mrs. John' L. King. LITERARY SOCIETY RESENTSPLAYLET DODDRIDGE CHAPEL, July 31. Doddridge Literary Society met Tuesday evening at the home of L. N. Greene, near Waterloo. After the roll was called and minutes read, Mr. Howard Greene gave an interesting reading from "The Fortnightly." Mr. Werklng of Milton, gave a reading which was followed by a playlet, "The Chinese Dummy," cast Including Marcla Greene, Anna Layson, Mary Dickson, Helen Gates, Borneo1" Wright and Isabel Greene. At thff Tlose of tho program dainty refreshments were served. The guests departed at a late hour thanking the hostess for a delightful evening. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Wright. "1 ITWAYNE BOYS ENTER JUDGING CONTEST Several Richmond and Wayne county boys have received letters from G. I. Christie, superintendent of the Purdue agriculture department asking them to enter the state live stock and grain judging contest. It will be held at the State Fair Grounds, Tuesday, September 5. Any boy between the ages of 16 and 20 years, inclusive, living in Indiana who has never been enrolled in any regular course in a school of agriculture may enter the contest. Four premiums are offered by the State ' Board of Agriculture. First premium is a scholarship either In the four year course or the eight weeks winter course in the Purdue school of agriculture, amounting to $100. Second premium Is a scholarship of $75; third, a scholarship of $50; and fourth a scholarship of $25. All boys who are planning to enter the contest are advised to write to Charles Downing, secretary of the Statu Board of Agriculture, Indianapolis. 3 A WATERMELONS ARE SCARCE. REPRESENTS ROAD IN STRIKE ISSUE

The Great Northern Railway company has chosen Macy Nicholson, who formerly lived here as their representative at an important conference to be held iq New York City the first of August for the settlement of perpJexities which are confronting the railroad world and are likely to cause a great strike. Mr. Nicholsons is a brother of Mrs. Charles Teetor and a relative of J. M. Hartley, with whom he m?.de his home here when a boy. He is quite well-known here and visited this place in his private car recently. At that time he lived at Great Falls, Mont., and was assistant general superintendent of the western division of the Great Northern railroad. He is now located at St. Paul, Minn.
