Child Labor In the senate there is now pending a bill to bar from interstate commerce commodities produced by child labor. Its terms aim at prohibiting employment of children under 14, the limitation of hours of employment of children under 16 to eight hours, and the prohibition of night work. '
This does not set a very high etandard and the bill's constitutionality is challenged, of course. But it has been passed by the house and should be passed by the senate. In the house it was saved by a heavy Republican vote in spite of a heavy Democratic vote against it. In the senate solid Republican support will "compel enough Democratic votes to enact the measure, especially as the president has been exerting influence in its favor. - The chief economic argument against state child labor laws is that it handicaps the manufacturers of prohibitory states in competition with the manufacturers of states having no such laws. This' is an argument for a national law, but even if it had no weight, there is reason enough without it to support such legislation. The interest of the. nation in the conservation of childhood is paramount. Child labor is a shameful stain on the escutcheon of the republic. That it has been tolerated so long is our disgrace. The commonest dictates of humanity are against it. It challenges our hearts and our brains. There should be no more doubt about its abolition than about the enforcement of a statute against murder, or the appropriation of money to check a plague. We have little doubt that the Supreme court will sustain the law if it is properly drawn, and in any case it should be given an opportunity to pass on it. Chicago Tribune.

Former Premier Venizelos openly challenges King Constantine's expressed belief that Germany cannot be defeated. Venizelos quotes an interview given by the king to a newspaper representative last January, in which the monarch declared that the war would result in a draw. "Who is new so blinded by prejudice," asks the statesman, "that he 'still believes in German victory? Who today, after the reorganization of the Russian army and the organization of Kitchener's army, by which ' England is raised to the rank of a great military power, still imagines that the war can be ended by a bastard peace in which there will be neither victor nor vanquished?"

NORMAL CONDITIONS REPORTED IN TRADES
Bradstreet's review of trade conditions here last week follows: Trade in general reported as normal with but little change from last week. The local wholesale and retail grocery and provision trade reported light owing to the extreme hot weather. Collections in this line reported a little slow. Building hardware trade fairly brisk, collections fair. Lumber business extremely good and the demand for building lumber is also good. Local piano . manufacturers report business in general falling off to some extent. Local lawn mower factories report trade letting up which is normol for this season of the year. Business this year was good and better than last year. ' Automobile industry still thriving and no little trouble is experienced in getting material with which to build the cars for which orders are already in. Live stock market here was quiet last week, however prices are good.
