Crime, Insanity and Poverty J. N. Hurty, recently penned the following opinion on the problems of crime, insanity and poverty : Taxes are going up. Why? Because of crime, insanity and poverty. Crime cost Indiana $20,000,000 annually. Insanity costs Indiana $5,000,000 annually. Whence come crime, insanity and poverty? The answer is well known. They come principally out of sickness

and feeblemindedness. Hpw may sickness and feeblemindedness be curled. . They ; can't be curedj they can only be prevented. Why don't we prevent? Incipally refuse to listen to those who know. The Germans use their scientists and reap benefits. We call pur scientists cranks and " lose "the benefits they would bring to us. , The scientists tell us feeblemindedness is a matter of heredity. This is true. There is no cure. It may only be prevented, arid this can only be done by stopping absolutely the breeding of', theunfit. Feeblemindedness increases under pur present methods of treatment. Asylums, so-called "charity societies," ; and ' "public

ness. The real and great charity is to practice prevention. Nature's way is the best. It is only as we follow nature that we succeed. Hygiene is the science which can lower our taxes. Lower taxes will never come with the multiplying of insane asylums, hospitals, drug stores and schools for the feebleminded. The hygienists (health cranks) can pracitically apply hygiene. Lawyers, merchants, editors, shoemakers' and wall paper cleaners, etc.,can not practically' apply hygiene to everyday life. IJoweverer, they can be sensible and practical, and see to it that our foolish faith in cure is smitten hard arid then stand " for' the ounce of prevention. Let us hope the scale will fall from their eyes and that they will see and do. The most important business before the business man today is the business of the public health.

HIDDEN PUZZLE
BESIDE THE POND. Man concealed. Answer to yesterday's puzzle: Right side down above doll. The Forum (Articles contributed for this column must not be in excess of four hundred words. The identity of all contributors must be known to the editor. Articles ' will be printed in the order received.) Monte Vista, Colo., July 18, 1916 To the Editor of "The Richmond Palladium: , As a former resident of Richmond, and having recently read two of your papers telling of the murdering in cold blood of two of your brave police officers, please allow me, if there be space to say a few words. To the wet voters of Richmond I desire to tay that God and the temperance forces regard YOU as a party to the terrible dual murder committed in your fair city. Not only the man who pulled the trigger should be tried for murder, but all you voters who" voted for licensed saloons in 1913 and all should receive a just sentence. The stain of the blood of brave Officers Stephenson and Little is, figuratively speaking, on your hands. Can you wash it off? Oh men! if you be men, this will haunt you. Can you not hear the widows' and orphans' cry and realize that you are responsible? Maybe you have been condemned already. No, you can wash the stain of guilt away. But confess your sin to our kind and 'merciful Savior for He will abundantly pardon. . Beg His forgiveness and

No funeral arrangements have been made. when ' that wonderful peace " floods your souls, arise, O voters, I implore you, arise in the dignity and strength of manhood and help 6trike liquor its death blow. Try to retrieve part of the heartache you have caused. Let us wipe this damnable traffic from God's fair world. Tho created in God's image we are not living up to our calling nor to our privileges. . Liquor weakens the physical body; liquor steals away the reason, the will power, often the brain itself, makes fiends and lunatics out of Gcd's creatures; liquor robs countless millions of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; liquor depopulates homes but populates insane asylums, hospitals for defective children, jails, prisons, etc. yea, liquor buys the very immortal souls of millions. Shall it stay with your permission? Help wipe it from your beautiful city so it will be a fit place to rear the growing generation. Saloons cannot run without boys. Have you one to spare?
