Mercer of Minneapolis are expected to arrive Saturday for several days visit with Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Anderson. . Mr. and Mrs. Paul Edgerton of Anderson have arrived have arrived for an indefinite stay. Mr. Edgerton is employed with a threshing crew. Mr. and Mrs. Gifford Hunt and fon of Connersville were entertained at the .home of Forrest Lacey Tuesday evening. . The Rev. and Mrs. Cory are spending this week in Fountain City, parsonage Repaired. The Wesleyan parsonage is being repaired. Esther Brooks, Olive Garber. John Boren, William Brooks and T. E. Bortn motored to New Castle Wednesday. The W. C. T. U. recently divided for a contest under the leadership of Mrs. E. Hunt and Mrs. Purviance Hunt. The different sides are known as the A's and E's, each public meeting counting fifty points. Under the direction of the E's, Mrs. Logan Hunt of Carios City, county superintendent of the W. C. T. U., brought a class of six to the Friends church Saturday evening to try for the gold medal. The medal was presented by Mrs. 0. N. Huff, county president of the W. C. T. U., to Miss Katherine Cox of Carlos. During the intermission for the judges' decision. Miss Lois Johnson, who was awarded a gold medal over a year ago, gave a reading. Miss Lucy Bogue of New York gave piano selections from Beethoven. Miss Davis sang songs, accompanied by Echo Roland. BIRD BREAKS ONLY EGG LEFT IN NEST

If one instance observed here recently can be taken as a rule, birds -rill destroy their eggs and leave a nest when they discover that human beings are tampering with their Lomes. Recently a local student of birds, Walter Ratliff, made observations of t habits of the flicker or yellow Mmmer. The first egg was laid on 1ay 19. Each day Mr. Ratliff removed one of the eggs from the nest being careful not to disturb the nest itself. Until June 1, the female bird laid 21 eggs. This is a record as other observers have reported the flicker as laying only as high as 15 eggs under similar tests. 1 On the last day of his observations p.lr. Ratliff disturbed the nest. When fhe bird returned she punctured the egg remaining in the nest with her Ibill, carried the shell outside and Sropped it on the ground. She flew way and never returned.

DENTISTS HOLD PICNIC WITH THEIR FAMILIES

Target shooting and borseshoa tournaments were the chief amusements at the annual picnic of the Wayne county dentists, which was held yesterday afternoon at Glen Miller park. Eleven dentists and their families attended. A basket supper was served at 5 o'clock. Those present were Dr. C. A. Kneise, of Cambridge City; Dr. R. C. Leslie, of Cambridge City; Di. H. B. Loper, Dr. Frank Harding. Dr. N. S. Cox, Dr. W. J. Smith, Dr. A. B. Price, Dr. H. E. Moss, Dr. F. S. Anderson, Dr. A. 0. Martin, Dr. Robert A. Chat-tin.

DECK REMAINS AWAY.

Charles B. Beck is not attending the annual convention of the Indiana State League of Postmasters which opened in Lafayette yesterday. Urgent business kept him away. A number of unusually important civil service examinations to be held in the near future have been announced by Frank W. Wilson.

WHITE GALLS BLUFF OF ARMY OFFICERS OVER OHIO GAMP

It remained for a Richmond boy Al White one of the some 11,000 guardsmen in camp at the Ohio concentration camp at Columbus, to call the bluff of the officers in charge of his regiment. White, along with eleven other members of Company H,. of Dayton, refused to sign the federalization bill which would make it imperative that he remain in the service for a period of three years. In a letter to Richmond friends, White relates how himself and companions were thrown in the guard house "to think it over." Later White with another non-commissioned officer was brought before the company and their arm-stripes symbols of their .rank were . then torn' off. Seven of the original hold-outs finally signed the bill. In a private interview with the colonel of the regiment White says he called the bluff of the officer in charge. White was later released from the guard house and was not obliged to sign the bill. "I am free to come home at any time and will be back in Richmond by the first of September," concludes White.

STIFF NECKS WILL WORRY CITY IN 1917

Richmond is threatened -with an epidemic of stiff necks in 1917. The plague will probably be superinduced by the tendency of the population to look upward. The whir of the transcontinental aeroplanes will keep people looking upward. The Aero Club of America has announced its intention to start

the line in 1917. As Indianapolis and Pittsburg are controlling stations many of the machines are expected to be routed over Richmond.

RETURNS TO POSITION.

Timothy Welsh has returned to his position at the Railroad store where it is stated that he has fully recovered from illness suffered during a funeral at Liberty the first of the week.

SCOUTS TO EXAMINE TENDERFOOT BAND

Boy scouts held drill practice at Athletic Park last night. On Friday night the tenderfoot examination will be given to a group of boys at the home of Richard Mansfield, 27 South Seventeenth street.

Particularly will the services be commemorative of the founding of the state one hundred years ago. One of the selections by the quartet will be Prof. Kampe's new song, "Indiana." A special invitation has been extended to the old soldiers and the members of the W. R. C. A week later a similar program will be given at Jacksonburg. PROMOTERS TO MEET Promoters of the Wayne County Baseball association, the organization which is promoting the county series, will meet at Williamsburg tonight. Williamsburg, Hagerstown, Cambridge City and Richmond will be represented.

SPARTANSBURG DISPLAYS FLAGS V IN HONOR OF RECRUITING OFFICER

Although Spartansburg does not get to give any passing troop trains an official reception, it turned cut yesterday to show its patriotism when Sergeant Bond of the local recruiting station, went through there to advertise the army. Bond had not been in town long before he noticed that the homes and business houses were beginning to tske on patriotic garb. He asked one of the residents what kind of a celebration the people were planning. "Why," replied the man, "this Is all In your honor. The people want to show their loyalty to the United States and they decided that when you came on your next trip here they would give you a patriotic reception." "This little speech made me gasp for breath," said Bond this morning. "Usually the people of small towns close their doors and watch me like hawks, for fear that I may induce some of the promising young men to leave the village for the army.

"The real climax came when I went to dinner as a special guest in a rea taurant. The children of the towr lined up along the sidewalk In front of the door and let me march through in majestic order. After I sat down, the youngsters came Inside and all the time that I ate marched around the table waving their flag6." '
