County Surveyor Heca thorn has filed a certificate with the board of commissioners asking that an allowance of $1,872 be granted him for salaries of deputies and assistants in his office. He asks that the allowance for the year begin September 4, 1916. John Ryder, present deputy is a candidate for nomination to the office on the Democratic ticket. U. S. MAJOR FINED BY BRUSSELS COURT LONDON, July 17. According to Belguim newspapers, Major Dutton of the United States army has been fined $125 at Brussels for "disrespectful behavior toward a German officer." HEAT IN GRAND RAPIDS CLAIMS BANK PRESIDENT GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., July 17. J. J. Eckhart president of the Farmers and Merchants bank at Lake Odessa, died of the heart today, making the sixteenth victim In Michigan this week. Ten have died in Detroit, two in Grand Rapids, one in Clarkesville, one in Big Rapids and one in Coloma. No fewer than 30,000 children out of a total of 48,000 on the school rr.Ils of Newcastle, England, are attending school half time only, being either directly or indirectly engaged in war work.

TIME WUZ. twpoc m STATE INSPECTOR AFTER BOOT LEGEB OXFORD, O., July 17. George Moeller and W. M. Bonebrak, inspectors of the State Liquor License board, Columbus, are in Oxford endeavoring to locate bootleggers. Friday they examined about' forty witnesses. An affidavit was issued against Clarence Cox, living on the outskirts of town. His place was raided and two barrels of empty beer bottles were found. He was dismissed with , a reprimand. It is understood that several other warrants have been issued, but no further arrests have been made. The inspectors continued their session Saturday. TODD CONFESSES -TO STEALING GOBI LIBERTY, Ind., July 17. John Todd better known in this county as "Bud" Todd, has again been arrested, this time on complaint of Ross Witger, who had lost a quantity of corn from his grainry. Sheriff Post was notified by Mr. WTitger and went at once to his home. He was told whom Mr. Witter suspected, and then went to the home of Todd, about a mile and a half distant. After searching the barn, the corn described was found, and Todd was arrested. Todd was brought to Liberty immediately, and confessed. The disposition of the case will probably come up at the special term of court which has been ordered by Judge George L. Gray, to convene beginning August 7, when, it Is supposed the hearing of the men arrested at Laurel on the charges of compli city in the wholesale theft of Fords, wm come up. Mr. Todd has been under a suspended sentence since the fourteenth of last April. At that time he was sentenced to three months in jail and a fine of $1.00 and costs, which sentence was suspended. He had pleaded guilty to the charge of whipping his I daughter cruelly.
