Merchant Supcrsubmarine j John Bull's sea supremacy received another Ijolt Sunday morning when a German merchant taupersubmarine sailed up Chesapeake bay with a cargo of dyestuff, mail, bonds and messages to the German embassy. The submarine is 315 feet long, manned by twenty-nine men, and cartied 750 tons. Her commander announced that
others of this fleet would arrive in American porta with regularity. If the war had not produced so many wonder-
fful achievements, the world today would hardly
be able to grasp the gigantic feat accomplished by this submarine. It outwitted the British patrol fleet of the North Sea, navigated the Atlan
tic ocean, eluded the blockaders of the ' Allies'
fleet, and reached an American port in safety. The feat is marvelous., , . All the boasts of Great. Britain's effective blockade of the German ports have been knocked into a cocked hat by this daring blockade runner. If Germany has a fleet of these gigantic submarines, nothing can prevent her from getting the materials she needs for her munition plants and for the other industries that are essential in keeping any army supplied. Germany has answered the challenge of England regarding sea supremacy. The German navy has been supplied
;with the precedents and achievements necessary
to keep the men on an edge and give them confidence to meet a foe. ; . ; " , - England scoffed at the reports circulated in marine circles a few weeks ago that a submarine would sail to America. Today she is forced to explain how it was possible for the U-boat to make the trip, or she is trying to minimize its importance. The German merchant marine and navy have given a good account of themselves in this war. v
Honoring the Brave Some form of recognition is due Orville Ross, the young colored man, who overpowered the murderer of Patrolmen Little and Stephenson, early Saturday morning, while Patrolmen Little was passing into the great beyond and the murderer was almost free to make a dash for liberty. Ross showed courage in the situation. He grappled with Carr, dazed him with a blow and held him unassisted until Patrolman Kuhlman arrived on the scene. Courage on the part of a civilian in a fight of this kind is to be commended. The City Council would not be demeaning itself or the city by recognizing the brave deed of Ross. Many citizens hope that Council at its next session will remember the valor of the civilian who showed
courage when the officers of the law had been killed, in the fight.
COMMANDER OF THE GRAND FLEET Admiral-Sir John Jellicoe, whose arrival at the scene of the Jutland battle turned the tide in favor of the British

Despite signs of continued peace with Mexico, Uncle Sam is taking every precaution to be ready in case of sudden turn of events. This picture shows a group of American soldiers at El Paso in the act of unloading 1500 rounds of shells which are suited to 4.7 guns. Although Uncle Sam is hoping to avert a break, this and other actions are proving to Mexico that this time our government is wide awake to any possible emergency.

Thin men and women that big, hearty, filling dinner you ate last night. What became of all the fatproducing nourishment it contained? You haven't gained in weight one ounce. That food passed from your body like unburned coal through an open grate. The material was there, but. your food doesn't work and stick, and the plain truth is you hardly get enough nourishment from your meals to pay for the cost of cooking. This
is true of thin folks the world over
Your nutritive organs, your functions of assimilation, are probably sadly out
of gear and need reconstruction.
Cut out the foolish foods and funny sawdust diets. Cut out everything but the meals you are eating and eat with
every one of those a single Sargol
tablet. In two weeks note, the difference. Let the scales be the judge
Five to eight good solid pounds of healthy, "stay-there" fat may he the net result. Sargol aims to charge
weak, stagnant blood with millfons of
fresh new red blood corpuscles to
give the blood the carrying power to deliver every ounce of fat-making ma
terial in your food to every part of
your body. Sargol, too, mixes with your food, to prepare it for the blood in an easily assimilated form. . Thin people tell how they have gained all the way from 10 to 25 pounds a month while taking Sargol and say that the new flesh 'stays put. Sargol tablets are a careful combination of six of the best assimilative elements known to chemistry. They come 40 tablets to a package, are' pleasant, harmless and inexpensive, and Clem Thistlethwaites 4 stores and all other good druggists
in this vicinity sell them subject to an absolute guarantee . of .weight -increase or money back as found in every large package. Adv.

The program fpr the Richmond Chautauqua assembly Is now in the hands of th printers, The Nicholson printing and Maufacturlng Co., and will be ready for general distribution, in about . two weeks. The -real Chautauqua weather of the past ten days has caused a number of inquiries to be made in regard to camping facilities, and a rush to reserve spaces is expected when the plat is opened to all former campers at the Y. M. C. A. building Aug. 1. The list of talent is up to the usual standard and the program as a whole is one of the best that' could be procured. , The requests for former favorites will bring some familiar faces to the platform again this season, and many others will appear who have more recently come to the front as head-
liners. '''".' "
Not only because of the financial
aid the Chautauqua has been to the city in beautifying the park and to the Y. M. C. A., which has 6hared in the profits for several years, but because of tho moral tone, the broader view of life, the uplift to the discouraged, the management . asks the hearty co-operation of every one to make this the biggest and best sea
