FEAR HURRICANE CAUSES DISASTER
JACKSONVILLE. Fla., Julr 7. Fears that the terrific hurric&ne which for eventy-two hours ewept ithe Gulf of Mexico and , then drove ! Inland over the Alabama and Florida coast had caused a gTeat catastrophe grew hourly today. Efforts to get into communication with Mobile, PenBacola and other coast towns failed during the early hours of the morning. Reports received from the outskirts of the hurricane swept zone indicated that heavy damage had been done, but gave no information as to whether there had .been loss of life. At tome points the gale reached a velocity of more than 100 miles an hour, tearing ships from their anchor1 age and carrying , houses on shore more than a mile. For many hours there had been Intense anxiety over the United States transport Sumner, bringing many refugees to Tampa from Vera Cruz, ! but early today a radiogram from the !fihip stated that it 'had avoided the fury of the hurricane. The funeral services of the late David Nugent were conducted from the family residence on West Main street, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the presence of a large concourse of relatives and friend3. The Rev. F. C. McCormick gav a short 6ermon taking for his subject, "The Building of a ! Life." Masonic lodge, No. 108, of Milton gave beautiful ritualistic services appointed for the house, on Wednesday evening and concluded their ceremonies at the cemetery. Members Eastern Star, of which the deceased was also a member were seated in a body at the houce and gave the introductory part of the ritualistic burial service, by the Worthy Matron, Mrs. Anna Goebel, of Cambridge City, and the prayer by the chaplain, Mrs. Mary J. Brown. A quartet composed of Sisters Mrs. John A. Brown, Mrs. Hattie H. Heist, Mrs. Robert Beeson and Miss Kathryn Hoshour, concluded the -work. The music was furnished for the funeral cervices by Mrs. R. W. Warren, L. H. Warren and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Doty. The interement was at Riverside cemetery. The pall bearers were composed of three brothers from the Blue lodge at Milton, R. F. Callaway, W. L.
