FRIENDS MISSIONARY FLEES FROM MEKIC0
Miss Kancy Lee. a missionary under the direction of the American Friends Board of Foreign MUsions with headquarters in Richmond, has fled from Mexico. . She wa3 the last missionary to leave and had remained to protect the mission property at Matamoras. She left property under the care of two native workers, and Ros3 Hadley. assistant secretary of the board, said today that all the valuable- property has probably been destroyed by this time. This will mean quite a loss to the board. A letter from P. Solomon Tice, an
other Friends missionary working under the direction of the local office, who was forced to leave his Mexican po3t at Victoria says that all civil and military officers have withdrawn from Matamoras and taken a stand further inland. Thus Matamoras is left at the mercy of the thieves and wicked natives, making it absolutely unsafe for Mirs Lee to remain longer. Mr. Tice is in San Benito, Texas, a small town near the border. He reports that everything is quiet in that district and that the people do not seem in the least excited about the Mexican trouble.
FORWARD STEPS TAKEN TO OBTAIN HOSPITAL
A county-wide campaign to promote the tuberculosis hospital and urge upon the county commissioners and tha county council necessity of immediate etepa in this direction, was inaugurated at a meeting of the Wayne County Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis last evening. rteport was made by the special rommlttee which adopted by the society as a whole. The report of Dr. J. C. Perry, federal health expert, indicated that the three most valuable agencies in combatting tuberculosis are a trained nurse, a dispensary and a hospital. MJsa Mary Kennedy, of Lawrenceburg, Ind has been employed as nurse. Plan for Dispensary. Arrangements are being made for the establishment of a dispensary. Special committee composed of Mrs. William - Dudley Foulke, Mrs. A. W. Roach and Dr. A. L. Bramcamp was appointed last evening. Miss Kennedy reported last evening that during her three week's active service in the county, she had visited twenty-two cases of tuberculosis. Resolution Adopted. The following resoltuion was adopted by the society last evening: "The Wayne County Society for the Prevention of Tuberculosis earnestly urge upon the county commissioners and the county council that steps be now taken for the construction of a county tuberculosis hospital in which Incipient cases may be cured and advanced and dangerous cases be relieved and segregated so as to avoid the danger of contagion wherever this cannot be effectively done within the patients' home. "We call attention to the fact that tuberculosis is the most fatal of all diseases carrying off a larger percentage of our citizens than any other; that Us most fatal effects are seen In the young and middle aged whose lives are most valuable to the community. Tuberculosis is a preventable disease, 450 cases now exist in this county with an average of 65 death a year of those whose lives can be saved by the application of adequate preventive measures. We call attention to the fact that a survey made by the federal government at its own expense has given to the people of this county special and . peculiar .acllltles of combating the disease and
that It is our duty to avail ourselves of the information furnished by this survey In our efforts to eliminate the scourage. We believe that public opinion is now ripe for energetic measures for this purpose. Three Agencies Indicated. "The federal report Indicates the three most valuable agencies are: First; a trained nurse; second, a dispensary, and third, a tuberculosis sanitarium. This society has already secured the nurse and provided funds for carrying on the work during the coming year. We will also . use our best efforts to establish a dispensary and will endeavor to raise the necessary funds for the purpose, but there is one other thing which is equally necessary which we can not do without the assistance of the county authorities and that is the establishment of the tuberculosis hospital. The law authorizes it and even allows funds to be borrowed on credit of the county for this purpose by bonds and otherwise. The county commissioners have full power to insert an appropriation in the budget, and the county council to pass the appropriation. The expense of constructing and maintaining such an institution in comparison with other county institutions and other hospitals is not great. Dr. Perry informs us that a hospital accommodating some thirty patients in all can be erected for about $25,000, and with the necessary land and equipment, an appropriation of that amount for two years ought to be amply sufficient to establish and maintain the sanitorium during that period. Excels All Improvements. "There is no other public improvement now contemplated of equal Importance with this. Good roads and fine bridges are a great convenience, but they are by no means so necessary to life and happiness as the elimination of disease, and to expend hundreds and thousands of dollars upon these while neglecting to care for the lives of our citizens would be inexcusable to the last degree. This is an issue which affects us all. Those who consider themselves and their families immune may be afflicted at any time with this dreadful scourge, and we most earnestly urge our county commissioners before appropriating vast sums of money to other less important objects to see to it that the most vital of all is provided for."
