PROGRESSIVES
Continued From Page One. Colonel 'Roosevelt amid stirring and tumultuous scenes. Leaders made no attempt today to minimize the gravity of the situation, although there was a . generally expressed hope that a compromise could be effected. On the one side was George W. Perkins, financial angel of the organization, and William Flynn of Pittsburg, both of whom advocate the placing of Justice Hughes at the head of the party ticket. On the other side were John M. Parker, vice presidential nominee; Victor Murdock and Dr. ,E. M. Harris of Rhode Island, all of whom are strongly opposed to any deals with the Republicans that will embody a recognization of Justice Hughes as the party's candidate. Perkins held conferences with various personages until far into the morning. Just what the results were it was impossible to ascertain, but it is believed that Perkins is prepared to offer the committee a plan the principal features of which are that the organization will be maintained and Justice Hughes name be placed at the head of the ticket.

a concrete road from Cambridge City, three miles south through Milton, were paid to the county auditor Saturday and the petition was withdrawn
because of insufficient number of sig natures.
Originally there were 93 signers to the petition, more .than enough to
make .the . instrument legal.. At the
meeting, of the commissioners two
weeks ago, however, fifty of the signers were represented and asked to have their names withdrawn. Their request was granted on condition that all expenses of "advertising and tiling charges be paid. John W. Judkins, . representing the property owners who wished to withdraw from the petition, paid the remainder of the costs, which amounted to $97. ' Opposition to the proposed permanent improvement arose when it was found that the construction would cost Washington township at least $45,000, which would bond it almost to the limit taxpayers who appeared before the commissioners believed that a better way to . handle the road situation in that township would be to distribute this money over all the roads.

TRIP FROM CHICAGO ' COSTS BOB LACEY ONLY FIFTY CENTS
Omar, who has a mark of 2:05!4, will endeavor to come back for C. L.: (Kentuck) Floyd this year on the tracks of the Grand Circuit. He was out of commission during the season of 1915, but during the past winter has been carefully trained for the coming campaign this year. The allowance rules of the Grand Circuit make him eligible to the 2:08 class and the wise trainers figure him to show his heels to most of -the members' of that class. He was better than a 2:05 trotter in the fall of 1914. - ; :
