ORPET TO TESTIFY: READY FOR ORDEAL

WAUKEGAN, I1L. June 23. Drpet will take the stand In his own defense In his trial for the murder of Marian Lambert. This was announced today - by his lawyers, and the state prepared to rest its case. Orpet will be the one big witness upon whose testimony the whole case will hinge. Orpet is ready for the. ordeal, followlngg numerous rehearsals, and his attorneys believe that the boy will not break down.

EXPLAINS INSURANCE TO LODGE MEMBERS

The Insurance branch of the K. of P. lodge was explained to the members of Iola lodge last night by Mr. Little of Indianapolis. He said that it, was now possible for a member ot: the lodge to take out benefit insurance under the same kind of policies that are offered by the old line insurance companies. Officers were nominated last night but the names of the candidates will be kept secret until after the election.

CARNIVAL MEMBER HELD FOR ASSAULT

Sam Berry, colored, today filed an affidavit against Henry Marshall on a charge of assault and battery, Marshall was arrested and ordered to appear In city court at 8 o'clock tomorrow morning. Marshall operates the merry-go-round at the carnival and Berry was an employe, up until the , time of a quarrel last night. The colored man accuses hla former employer with having struck him after a heated argument.

LIGHTING SYSTEMS WILL BE DESCRIBED

There will be a joint meeting of the ! board of public works and the property owners committee In regard to selecting lamps and standards for the ornamental lighting system for the central business district at the board's office, Tuesday morning at 9:30 o'clock.

VETERANS TO HOLD SPECIAL SERVICE

Special patriotic program has been arranged by the local post G. A. R., lor the meeting Saturday afternoon in the post rooms in the court house. Hev. Addison Parker will deliver a thort address and music will be furnished by a duet composed of Miss Ruth Hadley and Mies Gertrude Clark, accompanied by Miss Alice Newman on the piano. The program will be given after the regular business meeting of the post at 2:30 o'clock. LANSING NOTE SENT TO SOUTH AMERICA

WASHINGTON. June 23. Secretary Lansing has sent a memorandum to the diplomatic representatives of South and Central American nations, reviewing the situation existing between the United States and Mexico, and announcing that if hostilities should result the purpose of the United States would be to defend itself against further invasion and not intervene in Mexican affair.

TEDDY FOR HUGHES; PLANS MAKE FIGHT TO DEFEAT WILSON

NEW YORK, June 23r Developments in Mexico in the last forty-eight hours brought quick finish to Theodore Roosevelt's letter declining the Progressive party nomination for president As it now stands, and substantially as it will be read to the Progressive national committee in. Chicago next Monday, it is one of the warmest epistles to the American people Roosevelt ever penned. He flays Woodrow Wilson unmercifully, holding him responsible for the situation in Mexico today, and calls upon the American people to unite behind Hughes to defeat him. United Party or Wilson. In declining the nomination Roosevelt puts the issue squarely up to the Progressive national committee to choose between Woodrow Wilson and the discontinuance of the third party at a time when the country is facing perhaps its gravest crisis. The letter, as the finishing touches were put on it runs 3,000 words. At the same time it is read to the committee In Chicago on Monday It will be released for publication throughout the country. It at once make3 one of the strongest campaign papers that Hughes will have in the coming battle. Now Solid For Hughes. The completion of Roosevelt's letter was but one of several important developments here In the quick swinging of the Republican factions into line behind Hughes. As the slate 6tands Hughes is now assured of a practically solid party support. When Roosevelt's letter is made public on Monday it is believed here it will electrify the country, in so far as the Republicans are concerned, and will have the immediate effect of deciding Progressive leaders of Republican extraction who have been wabbling on the fence.

ATHENS, (via London), June 23. General "satisfaction is' shown among the public over the result of the ultimatum sent to King Constantine by the entente. The diplomatic representatives of the allies have recommendd the immediate lifting of the blockade and the stock market is rapidly recovering from its panic. The composition of the new cabinet was officially announced today as follows: Alexander Zaimis, prime minister and minister of foreign affairs; . General Calaris, minister of war and temporary minister of marine; Deputy George Rallis. finance; Phocian Negri, communications; Colonel Haralambis. Interior; Anthony Momperatos. justice; Constantine Libourikis. public Instructor; Colligas, national economy. The cabinet will be sworn in this evening. The chief of police of Athens, who is under the ban of the entente allies, has asked for sick leave.

NEW MADISON,' June 23. The Ohio Universalist church convention together with all the auxiliary organizations closed a four days' session here Thursday. With but few exceptions every church and its organizations in the state was represented by delegates, there being about 200 in attendance from out of town. , The closing session Friday evening was marked by a banquet given by the Y. P. C. U. Most of the visitors and delegates departed for their homes Friday. ' It was decided to hold 'the convention next year at Attica.

Galvorenka, and farther south in Bukowina have driven their forces forward southward and . captured Radautx, about "thirty miles below Czemowltz, and taken more officers, men and guns.

HOOSIER KILLED

SOUTH BEND, Ind., June 23. Mis Elizabeth Morey, sister of Captain Lewis S. Morey, reported In Mexican dispatches to have been killed In the battle of Carrlzal, today -awaits confirmation of her brother's death.
