Phil. Carter, one of the golfing sensations of the past year, is on the rampage again and is looming up as one of the most formidable contenders in the various tournaments throughout the east. Carter recently made a 69 over the improved links at Shinnecock. The yardage at Shinnecock since the improvements have been instituted, is now 6,080, with a par of 72. At Pinehurst this winter Carter demonstrated that his mashie shots are deadly and his recent activities show that he is improving, if anything. Those who watched his work declare that he will be a hard man to beat in the Metropolitan tournament which will be run off at Nassau, L. I.

champion of the world, is a big favorite in Richmond despite the fact that he no longer leads his division. Donnelly, the Hoosier, is well known and is strong with a certain contingent of Quaker ring game adherents.

Business in passenger departments of all roads through Richmond was very good during the past month. The ticket agents say that there was a substantial increase over the same period last, year, in spite of the fact that last May was an unusually good month. The Pennsylvania reports a 10 per cent increase over last May which is unusually good the ticket agents say considering that the California fair business was extra heavy during this period last year.
