The Republican Convention The eyes of the nation are centered on the Republican convention at Chicago. , Democrats as well as Republicans are wondering what the outcome of the deliberations will be. Upon the selection of the right man hinges victory for the Republican party and defeat for the Democratic party. Should the wrong man be chosen, President Wilson will be returned to the White House. The Republicans are cognizant of the importance of the decision they are to make. -Party workers cannot tell whether the old bosses will rule the convention or whether the .' will of the delegates will triumph ' Reports re-
managers of the various candidates. - The real test will come later. ' Every Republican admits that -the party is facing a serious crisis and that only forethought

the problem. ; The issues that were raised four years ago, have not died out. Unless these are given consideration and influences that made
l, them possible are curbed and held
Republican party will enter the campaign with a handicap which will make possible the election ' of Mr. Wilson.

The Hyphen The Indianapolis Star has commented on the hyphen question a number of times, always emphasizing tb,e fact that hyphens are negligible quantities. Recently it showed that the hyphen in German-American was not put there by the Germans but by the Americans. In an editorial on James J. Hill it says : Within a week millions of people in this country have read in thousands of papers that James J. Hill was born and reared in Canada and came to this country as a young man to seek his fortune. - Did any one of them ever hear him referred to as a Canadian-American? Did any one in this' country ever think of him as anything else than-an American? Did any one in the United States ever know of his thinking of himself as anything except an American? The Federal census of 1910 shows that there were in this country at that time 1,201,146 who had come to us from Canada and Newfoundland. Who ever heard of a single one in all that number classed as a Canadian-American? Did any one ever, know of their getting together before an election , and making demands or threats in the interest of. Canada? Does any one know of any particle of hostile sentiment in this country toward Canada or Canadians? . Reciprocal conditions are found on the other side of the border. Hundreds of thousands of people have gone across the boundary in recent years to cultivate the fertile prairies of the Canadian Northwest. Those familiar with conditions know that there are no American-Canadians up there. The hyphen simply does not exist for those who go from one-country to the other north and south of the international line.
