Several hundred persons attended the annual -exhibit of Garfield school last night. The best work done by the students during the year was collected in group exhibits. In one room on the first floor boys' drawings, both mechanical and freehand, were exhibited. In another room on the same floor an exhibit was made of samples of different jobs done in the printing department during the year. The equipment of the printing department was also on display.
On the second floor, exhibits were made of the girls' drawings and of posters and displays showing the value of the study of Latin. Cooking and sewing exhibits were on the third floor.
LONDON, May 26 The Italian steamer Ercole of Genoa has been sunk in the Mediterranean Sea by a submarine. The Ercole displayed 122 tons. The submarine is believed to have been Austrian aa dispatches to Lloyd's state that the Austrian admiralty is showing a great burst of submarine activity at present.

Although the committee has rlever held a meeting Superintendent Williams, chairman of the special committee appointed at the last state teachers association convention, will make a report at the meeting of the state superintendents' association, June 21-22 at Indianapolis. Prof. W. W. Black of Indiana university, is a member of the committee and is preparing data to be used in determining what changes should be made in the county school system.

Seven hundred and fifty thousand acres of land have been opened for
homestead purposes in southern California The government has also
opened 1,600,000 acres in South Dakota.
The accompanying map of the immediate neighborhood of Verdun shows the region in which some of the most furious fighting of the war has been going on for the past few days. The arrows shows the direction of the attacks, both French and German. By a counter offensive which assumed the propotions of a general drive, the French forced their way into Fort Douamont, long held by the Germans. On the west bank of the Meuse the French attacked west of Le Mort Homme and recaptured part of the ground recently lost there. The Germans endeavored to retake the Haudromont quarries northwest of the Fort Douamont, but failed. . .
