Bi-Lingual Men Needed.
The need of bi-lingual men in the service of the United States has never been more glaringly
apparent than just now. '
-' Positions are awaiting persons who can speak
German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian. ' Commercial attaches located in foreign coun
tries need clerks who are able to speak and write the vernacular of the country in which they are
stationed. The government needs clerks quali
fied in foreign languages for service in the bureau
of foreign and domestic commerce, department of commerce, Washington, On May 17, the Civil Service Commission will hold an examination to
obtain eligibles. for these positions. A bulletin says :
"Those who pass this test successfully will be placed on the eligible list for both positions. Clerks to commercial attaches are paid $1,500 a 4year, with expenses for travel and subsistence 'from Washington to the foreign post arid return. ! Clerks qualified in foreign languages are paid
somewhat less, but are in an advantageous position to qualify themselves for vacancies which may arise in the clerk-to-attache positions, or for
other high-grade positions in the field service."
Very little attention is paid by the average
American to the acquisition of a foreign language. In Europe, thousands are , able to use English passably fair, and many have acquired
a working knowledge of. two or three European languages. The advantage of studying foreign
languages has been advertised extensively by the government and by educational institutions, but students balk at the .work entailed in mastering an alien tongue. A bi-lingual man possesses qualifications which put him in a class of, his own and often assure his appointment to a lucrative post. The salaries paid by the government are not high, but they will enable a young man to live in a foreign country while he is making business connections that may, lead to a better salary.

Do you own an automobile, or have you a friend who owns one, or did you spend Sunday quietly at home?
Oh well if gasoline keeps going up you will have a lot of company.
But why not get a machine that doesn't take gasoline, to help you spend your afternoons and evenings? And pray what kind of a machine is that? Why a talking machine of course. Have you been fishing yet?
And have you cut the dandelions out of your yard?
"Extra! Brewery Drills Big Well; City, Claims Damage to Alley," says last night's headline. Now wpnder if the Brewery is planning to follow the" example of the milkmen.
Answer It. If a fellow takes a big long walk on a real hot Sunday afternoon; does it show that he has a lot of energy or that he is a big fool? Again the world can move on at perfect ease. Berlin answered favorably. At least it has been interpreted as such. That is one nice thing about vague statements. They are like a fortune teller's advice, you can make it mean almost anything.
