You know as well as I dearest, that we are mixed up in a terrible mess of trouble. I only do hope we may soon be free from Its awful grip.'' "Now, father, I would not worry If I were you. .We've always been successful in the end and I'm sure this case will be no exception. Spruce up, Daddy,' and be as calm as I am. Helen and Warren ; Their Married Life
By MRS. MABEL HERBERT URNER Originator of "Their Married Life," Author of "The Journal of a Neglected Wire," "The Woman Alone." Etc. .
"What the deuce- you talking about?" thundered Warren, whose arm had slipped from the back of Helen's chair and was resting against her shoulder. "It's against the rules of the management, sir. You will have to take your arm from about the lady." "The devil I will!" Warren fairly sputtered. "What the Sam Hill's struck you?" "It's the rules of the management," firmly. Warren's loud excitement was attracting attention. There was a general lull as every cne turned to-stare. Helen's embarrassment was mingled with an irresistible desire to laugh. It was so ludicrously absurd that in this sporty place such a thing should be considered an indiscretion! That Warren, among all this hilarious crowd, should be the one reprimanded! "Get my check!" he shouted, rising threateningly. "Don't have enough decent people in yohr blamed joint to know how to treat them! You're making a blithering fool of yourself!" "Get the gentleman's check," ordered the head waiter angrily. Helen, who dreaded a further scene, was tugging at Warren's arm, yet she was almost convulsed at the sheer absurdity of it all. The salted and peppered arm, the plastered rose leaves, the cigarette smoked in common, the half-clothed dancers were permissible. But the management had said a man must not put his arm around a girl and . THET CANT HELP IT. Tall Actress-T I like to act in' a play that brings tears. By Temple Warren had chanced to come under that ruling! "I'm sorry, sir," offered the head waiter, with an attempt at conciliation, "but I'm only carrying out the management's orders." "Orders be hanged! If you'd the brains of a rabbit, you'd use some discrimination. I'll write a letter to your management that'll let 'em know what a sniveling nincompoop they've got in here!" And Warren flung a bill on the check which the waiter now presented. With a shrug that implied he could not propitiate so irate a patron, the head waiter walked off, while Helen stood awkwardly beside Warren as he fumingly waited for his change. The crowd was too gay and boisterous to be long interested in so common, a disturbance as a row with the head waiter. Hardly a glance followed them as they made their way out. At the door Warren fairly jerked his hat and stick from the expectant check boy. Out side he strode along in raging silence. Helen had almost to run to keep up with his long, wrathful strides. "Oh, it was awful, I know," she panted, choking with laughter, "but it wa3 so so screamingly funny!" "Funny?" with a snort. "Of all the brainless, chuckle-pated boneheads!" "Oh, dear, you you were so funny! You didn't even know what he meant!" Warren stalked along with a grunt. But, farther on, under a flashing electric sign, Helen saw his face relax into a grin. His sense of humor was surmounting his rage. "Picked me for the goat from all that spiflicated bunch, eh? Ha, ha. that WAS pretty funny!" with a chuckle. "But all the same," belligerently, "if he hadn't been a waiter I'd have knocked his blooming block off!" Another Story Monday. Two But don't you think that perhaps it would be wise to consult your sister before you accept any Invitation from a man whom you scarcely know? Now don't be vexed" as he saw her flush "for I mean It kindly. You are very young, and you don't know life very well yet. And, anyway," with a sudden smile, "it won't mar your enjoyment of any pleasure to know that your sister knows of It and approves of it, now, will it?" He stopped; then, as she did not reply, he spoke again, but in a more formal tone. "I have decided upon second thought," he told her, 'no to dictate any more this morning. There is some business I can attend to instead for", with a forced laugh, "Som'erdyke's interruption has thrown me off the track of thought. So, Miss Marvin, I will not detain you any longer though of course, if you are not ready to leave yet you are at liberty to remain here as long as you wish." "Thank you," she said coldly. "Here," he added, "is today's paper if you wish to look over it while you are waiting. Good morning!" "Good morning," replied the girl, without meeting his keen gaze. Listening, after he had left the room, she heard him speak to Wang In the outer hall, then go out of the apartment. Delaine Visits Baird's Shop. For some minutes after Kelley Delaine went out Caryl sat motionless, just where he had left her. She felt a strong inclination to cry. She resented his interference in her plans, yet in the bottom of her heart she ap preciated that he had right on his side. But why need there always be something to mar her enjoyment, just when she might be so happy in anticipation of the first bit of pleasure she had in New York? Delaine had to remind her what her sister would say. What did he know about her sister, anyway? Absolutely nothing! He had seen her once and then only for a moment, so how did he. know what kid of a girl she was. And even if he did know, what business was it of his where his stenographer went or what she did? Suddenly her vanity suggested a solution to her question. He was jealous of Somerdyke. That was it. He was angry and resentful because his friend had gotten ahead of him in asking the girl out to luncheon. At this Caryl's spirits rose, the smile returned to her lips and the light to her eyes. She glanced at the clock and saw that it still lacked an hour of the time that she was to meet Somerdyke. She might begin to transcribe some of the dictations she had taken down in shorthand. She glan'ced over her notes and tried to read the first sentence of Delane's story. She found it hard work, and was disturbed because it took her almost five minutes to decipher twenty-five words. How would she ever get along if it was so difficult to read her own characters? Still she comforted herself with the thought that practice would perfect her in this line. Besides she was so nervous now that she could ADRIFT. I hear you have a bungalow at the seas ho re. I ,did have, bwt there was an unusually high tide the other day, and now I've got a houseboat.

not concentrate her thoughts. Kelley Delaine had she mused with vexation made matters hard for her by his assumption of authority. ' A jealous man was so unreasonable. Then she smiled again and decided that, as so much of the morning was gone,, It would be foolish to fuss over tier work any longer. If she hurried she might be able to go home an put on her best dress before 12 o'clock. She did not pause to reflect that if Somerdyke noticed the change In her coBtume he would attribute It to a desire on her part to impress him. She was too eager to be cautious or to feel a proper sense of pride. Donning her hat and jacket, she hastened from the apartment, leaving her notes behind on the typewriter table. When she reached the street she ran for a passing car and transferred from that to a line that went near her home.
