iington, who will succeed Major Robert R. Moton,
Sprincipal-elect of Tuskegee Institute.
Washington is a colored man who has worked jhis way up f rom bysterniari to a distinguished
i educator of his race. He learned the harness
'maker's trade at Hampton, showed aptitude as a Idisciplinarian and after thirty years of prepara

Feeling the Mule's Pulse
f"The kicking propensities of a mule is a
matter of common knowledge," held a Frank
fort (Ky.) jurist in reversing a verdict of $500 damages awarded a plaintiff who was kicked by a mule when he struck the animal with a whip as he stood behind the mule's batteries. The judge held the mule would have been untrue to itself and every tradition of the breed
if it had kept its heels on the ground, and-that an employe courts trouble when he invites a mule
o kick him.
Many a man asks the mule of disaster to kick
him when he engages upon unlawful practices
W dabbles in matters which he does not underistand. ,
1 Thanks!: ... "HATS OFF TO RICHMOND' says an "edi
torial caption of the Muncie Press.' .
, 3 Provincialism - is never shown -in a more pro
nounced manner than when one city gloats over
a factory it has taken from another or pokes fun
at a neighbor that is trying to push ahead.
The Indiana press had demeaned itself time
and again with cheap denunciations of rival cities and with vainglorious "boastings of municipal
pride. The. utterance of The Press is a notable exception. ; , Are not all Indiana . cities members of the same commonwealth? Are not all of us integral parts of the same slate? Is not the common good of the whole state the common good xf all cities, towns and -villages? Why keep up a spirit of mean rivalry? . ' . Why not encourage a brotherly feeling of cooperation, so that Muncie is glad when Richmond makes progress, and reciprocally Richmond says "well done? when: Muncie goes ahead? In the last analysis all Indiana benefits when an industry in one city makes a tremendous
growtn: juers encourage co-operation among Indiana cities and forget the petty jealousies
that are on the same level with the morbid rivalry of two farmers trying to outdo each other. The text of the editorial follows : . The factory of the Westcott Automobile company which has been developed at Richmond is to leave that city and go to Springfield, Ohio, where flattering offers have been made. But the enterprising citizens of Richmond are not daunted by the loss and the Commercial club has already arranged with another Richmond concern to use the . buildings to bevacated, and thereby
fill up the Westcott loss by increasing its own plant. The city of Richmond has been dealt some hard blows in an industrial way during the past few years but the community has met them with the right spirit and the city is still growing and prospering. When a city passes the twenty thousand mark, if its citizens have the right sort of stuff in them, it will weather every storm and come out on top of every industrial setback. The things needed are unity of purpose, a genuine municipal feeling, pride in the home town, and a commercial organization wide awake and able to deliver the goods.

THEATORIUM.
We understood that the big six-part feature, -Protect Ub," was indeed one of the most powerful exposes of the white slave traffic, but really we were Jiot prepared for the . striking . expose which we witnessed, in this picture. The many people who visited the Princess theatre yesterday and saw this (wonderful picture came away impressed as nothing had ever Impressed them before in regard to this awful condition. The lives "of four different girl? are taken as an example, and the mothers and fathers of every girl who feel for her welfare should see this great object lesson. This .picture strikes home in a way to be most convincing. It gives us a complete expose of the tricky methods of the "Runners," who are the
vampires of Innocent girlhood. One paper made the statement that this was the most stupendous and staggering expose of the seldom visible crimes of the great cities, and In this we heartily agree with them, Today is the laBt opportunity that will be afforded you to Bee this vivid appeal and .warning, and none of you can afford to overlook it.
