Beefs Alliance with Britain

The settlement of $15,000,000 between Great

Britain' and the beef packers for the seizure of packing house products, with the promise of Great Britain's regulation of meat shipments to

the. allies, moves the New York World to comment: . It appears that the settlement between- the British Government and the Beef Trust was something more than a treaty of peace. It amounts to an offensive and defensive alliance. To wipe out old scores for seizures of meats,

Great Britain pays Beef an indemnity in excess

of. $15,000,000. To make future; relations har

monious, Beef agrees that until the end of hos-r tilities Great Britain shall regulate all shipments of oackinflr-house nroduets to neutrals, enemy

shipments being discontinued. - s As this is the first treaty of peace that has been arranged between great powers in a long time, it can hardly fail to have importance as a precedent. Yet there is a possibility of complications. His Majesty Beef happens to have an overlord at Washington, D. C., who has strong convictions on the subject of neutral rights and responsibilities. What Beef has surrendered, Washington is insisting upon. " It would be embarrassing indeed if the plenipotentiaries of Beef should discover presently that their commitment to the side of a belligerent for the remainder of the war was regarded at Washington as in conflict with the principles of neutrality. In the realm of domestic law the sovereignty

of the United States has not been eminently suc

cessful in the enforcement of its will upon the

Beef Trust. Perhaps, now that the princes of

Packingtown have entered the -field of diplomacy on their own account and involved themselves in

the mazes of international law, it will be easier to

round them up.

April showers bring May flowers all right. But don't take our word for it Go out and look at the dandelions that have blossomed forth in your yard. Dandelions, are beautiful little flow ers, are they not.. The neighbor school boy who has to spend his noons and evenings digging them out of the yard answers ; emphatically that they are not. A mess of mushrooms wouldn't taste bad, eh. Now's the time to get them. But watch out that you don't get toad stools. Toad stools don't agree with the digestive organs in the same way that mushrooms do.
