HOW JEWISH HOLIES OBSERVE -r EAfeOF PASSOVER TONIGHT
' ,-PasBpyer, or- th'e' feast' of Matzohs, is) beUg observed by Richmond Jews, and it will continue .until Tuesday of next week, Sam Fred said today.. Passover U one of . the most sacred of Jewish holidays, In that it commemorates the deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt by ..Moses. .. . It begins on the fourteenth day of the Hebrew month Nisan and continues one. week. Tonight every Jewish home in Richmond will assume a -festival-like appearance, and before partaking of food the "Seder" service will be conducted. This ceremony includes the asking of the "Fier Hashes,' or four questions by the Junior member of the family, the partaking of bitter herbs, the ablation of vegetables into water. These rites or symbols of the ordeals endured by the Jews during their . sojourn In Egypt, with the exception of of the eating of- unleavened bread, which is emblematic : of the hurried exodus of the Jews -when they had no. time to stop and bake leavened bread. ( Read' Race's Story. After this service, known as the introductory service, the "Haggadah," or story - of Israel's bondage and its subsequent liberation, will be read. Of special significance will be the opening of the door to welcome Elijah the prophet;, for whose sake a special cup is placed on the table.Passover, or the feast of Matzohs, was first celebrated at Sinai by Joshua at Gilg4l, and was observed again after the second return of . the Jews from captivity, vlt ivas originally a festival of celebrating the arrival of the early spring by the shepherds before setting out; for- new, pastures. Then occurred the "Hag-Ha-Matzohs," or the eating of unleavened bread, incidentally, In the spring; hence the two festivals occurring about the time of the vernal equinox, were merged into one. u .
