A Victim of Politics. Dr. Theodore B. Sachs, former, head of the municipal tuberculosis sanitarium of Chicago, committed suicide there a few days ago. Dr. Sachs was one of the world's authorities on tu- ; berculosis. He had given his whole life to a study of the problem. When he saw that the sanita- ' rium, dedicated to the cure of Chicago's con1 sumptives, was to be made a pawn of a political ring, he believed his work had been defeated, and so he ended his life.
JNo one cares to justify suicide. A person who ends his life because he fears to face a crucial trial, is a coward. But there are such extenuating circumstances surrounding the death of Dr. Srfchs that one can say he died a martyr

to a cause, v AIL the Chicago newspapers accept this interpretation.' , -- The prostitution of political off ice to enhance "machine" 1 control is one of the disgusting side? lights on American life. In the Sachs " case, a benevolent institution, designed and supported by
the taxpayers for the ameloriation of human suf
feringfor the fighting of the great white plague,
hitherto free from the corrupting influences of
the professional boss, was to pass under the sinister influence of Chicago's municipal administration. It is a travesty on American citizenship that not even benevolent and charitable institutions
belonging to the people can be kept free from
political corruption. It is a disgrace when able
men, standing at the head of such institutions,
working at smaller.salaries than they could make if they were in active practice, are replaced by political sycophants, who put the dollar above
suffering humanity. .
There can be no happiness and real devotion to work in the hearts of the physicians who
connived with the political bosses to oust Dr.
Sachs; neither will their consciences be abso
lutely at rest so long as they live.
Retributive justice will single them out for
punishment. The law cannot reach them, but a torturing conscience, the haunting thought that they were responsible for a man's suicide, will disturb them until death ends this earthly
existence.
Neighbor Brown Practices a Tennis Stroke
Suppose some hostess announced that she would not serve refreshments, how many guests would she have at her party? Just as Mr. Foul&e says the country is at the mercy of any strong military power, but what do the majority of the people care about that since they are already at the mercy of the man who charges 20 cents per gallon for , gasoline. Just when it began to look as if Richmond were going to get a new factory, too. - ' -
Council certainly has made a wise move in calling mass meeting to discuss a new garbage ordinance. If the Coliseum is too small to hold the audience, an open-air meeting might be held at the Glen. Refreshments will not be served.
Having booked "a Literary Meet" with Liberty, we suppose the high school track team is practicing up on English composition and rhetoric.
The city council takes itself very seriously. A special meeting should have been called to consider paying Goodwin's expenses to the convention
and another to take up that 2x6 foot depression in South Eleventh street and other matters of great moment. The first name In the new city directory is Antonio Abatantuono. Tony would probably join the Allies. The last name is John Zwissler.

BERLIN DEiES KAISEEl SPECULATED IN HS
BERLIN, April 5. American papers recently reported that Emperor, William was one of the silent partners of Baron Constantlne von Alvensleben, who made millions in mining enterprises and real estate speculations in British Columbia and the state of Washington during the last few years, but has probably been ruined by the war. This rumor is branded as a. pure invention by the minister of the Prussian court. The Kaiser never speculated and never owned any 'stock in any industrial corporation, domestic or foreign. His alleged interest in Krupp works at Essen, is a piece of fiction of the British and French press, it is authoritatively stated. The entire private fortune of the ruler is invested in real estate and his large tile and majolica factory at Cadinen. The German princes as a rule never try their hand in -speculations, because with few exceptions they are so wealthy that they have not much de
sire to increase their fortunes. King!
William II, of Wuerttemberg. dabbled
in foreign stocks for a little while some years ago. He had very poor success, however, and sold his American and other shares after he had sunk half a million dollars or more.
