A Thrilling Serial of Devotion and Mystery
"What do you want me to do?" he burst out passionately. What can I do? Is it fair to talk like this? Is it fair? Tell me what you expect of me?" "I do not want you to do anything, Noel," she said sadly. "There is nothing you can do. I expect nothing of you. I am past all that long past it, Noel. And as for what is fair is there anything fair in the world?" "You shall not talk like that!" he cried passionately. "You are mad!
You cannot know what you are saying. Woman alive, you cannot be so
blind as to thing that, even if if"
He was going to say that even if he
loved her, even if she was all his life, that she was the wife of another man and therefore sacred to him, and that 1o think of her as anything else than the wife of her husband was a dishonor and a crime. But the look she pave him froze the unspoken words on his dry, white lips. He was silent, lie had nothing to say. She Calls Eva a Hollow-Souled Girl. She. frhook her head again. "I am not mad, Noel," she said. "The veil has been dropped from my eyes nnd I see everything quite plainly. Oh, I have been through many hells since since ihe day when I first heard the truth from your lips many phases. What does it matter? . It is all over and done with done with forever. "There was a time, though I do not think I ever let you know it, when I was consumed with hatred for you, hatred bred of my great love; when I had only thoughts of revenge in my heart; when yes, when, but for a small thing, I might have blindly wrecked my life and perhaps Godfrey's, and the giii s; though I do not consider her much. "She is only a silly, golden-haired, hollovv-souled child, who will fall in love a dozen times in her life, even If Hie in your your wife.

"Well, all that time I helped you, aided you, to get out of the difficulty. You must admit that. You must admit that I have held your honor honor, forsooth!" her voice stung him with its scorning irony "I held your honor safe! And for what! Not for my own sake. Y'ou know that. Certainly not for Godfrey's sake; though you may not be so certain about that. Not assuredly for the girl's bah, how I hate her! No, I did it all for you, Noel for you!" "And you know quite well that I appreciate it very, very much, and that I thank you and there is nothing you may not ask of me. You forget that there are some things in the world upon which men and women can never see eye to eye. Brooke is my friend. You are his wife" She rose and stretched out her arms to the open window. The lightning seemed to play around and about her,

the thunder-claps were stupendous. It was horribly uncanny. The man shivered, his teeth chattered. He was very frightened, and yet he knew not of what. , ' ' "I cannot live while I know there is another woman in your life,"., she went- on, in a veritable paroxysm of fury and jealousy.' "I cannot be responsible for what I do if I live! Therefore I I am going to give it up!" . , . . "But you shall not talk like this!" he cried, and his voice sounded ridiculously weak in his ears, like a child crying out in a storm. "This is sheer lunacy! You are wicked! Zoe, do be sensible!" How weak and futile it was! How thin was his voice! How infinitesimal his appeal and his argument! She was some grim and T.lentless Fate, far removed from him, living and speaking and acting on another plane. She Begs Him Again to Take Her Away. She turned and faced him. For the moment she " looked as she had done in the old Bohemian days of their romantic acquaintanceship. "Noel," she said, holding out her arms longingly, appealingly, "won't you take me away? I ask you for the last time. You can hold me if you will; stretch out yo hand. I am waiting. I will be your slave. I only want to sit and watch you paint, to wait upon you. I won't trouble you no, I promise I won't, if you will only take me away and keep me somewhere where I can see and hear you speak. I ask nothing more": "Stop!" he said, and his voice grew stronger. "You know you are asking the impossible." "You mean that you won't give her up that golden-haired doll with the blue eyes?" "As you will" he retorted, this time with some show of resentment and irritation. "I really cannot argue with you. You are the wife of anoth
er man. I I am, to an intents ana purposes, the husband of another woman. Please do not refer to that again.' Come, come, do be sensible!" The woman stared at him fixedly for the space of about five seconds, and then nervously took out her handkerchief and dabbed it on her lips seemingly to bite it. The man watched her unsuspiciously. A peculiarly lurid flash of lightning
illuminated the room, blinding - them for a moment; then a crash of thunder, like heavy artillery at close range. The, woman.gavealittle cry. Her handkerchief dropped from her hand. 1 It .had hidden something, else, but the man did not know then. She held out her hands, and staggered towards him. Her eyes were starting from ' their sockets. She looked weird ad terrible. "Oh!" she shrieked. I I did not know it would be like this. Oh, oh, my God! Noel, save me! I oh, what have I done?" . The man, white as death, caught her in his arms, fear in his heart. "What is.it?" he gasped. She lifted her terrible face to his. She smiled. That smile of; hers
j haunted him to his dying day.
Kiss me, Noel! she choked. "Kiss
me for the last time! Oh!- I loved you so, I loved you so!" Hardly knowing wht he did, -he
j kissed her. then started back with a
sharp cry, for he. held, a dead .woman in his arms. The mighty peal of thunder died away in the distance in low, growling laughter like the laughter of fiends. ' ( To Be Continued.)

A QUOTATION FOR MANUFACTURERS
Here is. a quotation from a recent issue of Newspaperdom that is well worth the study of every manufacturer: "Take two cities of about the same size and class of people. In one city advertise your product in the newspaper in the other, do nothing. "Your sales book will tell the story. "Or figure out your sales in a city where you do not advertise and watch your sales jump quickly and surely a little figuring will tell just what the newspapers have done for you. On the other hand, due to its scattered circulation, the increase in sales in each city is so small that it is practically impossible 'to find out which is your best territory. Newspapers afford the very best test as to the efficiency of your advertising."
