Mr. Webster's estate was not large, measured in figures of contemporary wealth. It is gratifying to note that he set aside part of it for the benefit of the people who helped him make the fortune he accumulated. Published Every Evening Except Sunday, by Palladium Printing Co. Going to South America , American commerce is seeking new outlets. It has discovered a profitable field in Central I America. Garard Harris, has furnished a report to the Department of Commerce. .He shows that jwe have gained considerable trade, "but is strongfly of the opinion that a much bigger percentage
I of the business should be done by Americans as la result of present opportunities. To make the
most of these opportunities, however, Mr. Harris declares it will be necessary to invest more American capital in the republics, to extend more
liberal credits, to improve banking facilities for
export trade, and to make more direct and per
feonal efforts in the markets."
Limiting Foolish Extravagance.
The action of the senior high school girls in
! setting $5 as the limit for a graduation dress
'deserves commendation. A high school is not a
! place to develop snobs, but is a democratic institution in "which the children of citizens of all classes are obtaining an education. In every class there are a number of pupils whose parents 'cannot afford to spend much for special dresses. !The ostentation sometimes displayed by 'girls
whose parents are well-to-do not only shows scant
consideration for others but often also creates a feeling of rivalry that leads to unpleasant incidents.
Giving Back Some of It. Under the will of Charles B. Webster, a dry goods merchant of New York, who died a few weeks ago, a house is to be built for working girls. The apartment is to be conducted without profit. His will says that the merchant hopes thereby to improve the condition of some of the
: Money in Ships. "War Brides" are not the only sources of newly acquired wealth these days. Thousands of dollars are being made in the shipping industry, rivalling the palmiest days of merchant marine
activities in the United States. Rates paid for
deep-water voyages are the highest in the his
tory of the ; Atlantic seaboard. Old ships that a fetf "years ago were declared fit only for the marine graveyard, are being sold for more than
their original cost. " '
Here are a few examples of the money, that is
being made in shipping:
For a trip from Philadelphia to Buenos Aires
and back, the Minnesotan is to receive $100,500 a month with cargo both ways. This is the
record rate on a time charter. v
A four-masted schooner, recently sold for
$55,000. Her value is increasing at the rate of
$500 a month. In 1915 her owners would have sold her for $25,000. Her carrying capacity is 1,300 tons.
A four masted schooner, built in 1897, brought
$30,000; repairs amounting to $5,000 were put into her, and she sold for $55,000; her last owner paying $73,000. Schooners running from Philadelphia to Buenos Aires are netting their owner about $47,000 every six months.
Charlie Chaplin and His Troubles. Charlie Chaplin has fallen in disfavor in his native land. Britons are peeved because the comedian is satisfied to see action before the movie machine and not before the German machine guns. The London News, in its crusade to drive American films out of British movie theatres, calls Chaplin a slacker. Charlie recently wrote a letter to a military paper in England in which he said movie contracts kept him in America. London now is speculating whether Charlie will invest some of his money in the British war loan to placate public wrath. Charlie 'may be a slacker, but it's a sure bet that he will live longer facing the camera man than the German machine gun operator..
