"The automobile show was marvelously creditable to Richmond and to those who made It triumphed as the first event of its kind here. Richmond need apologize to no other city for its display. I have a greater respect for the city and Us promoters as a result of the enterprise. "What do you as Christians intend j to exhibit" he continued. "Will you display before the Throne of God, a worn-out, defiled and damaged model of Christianity or will you as a good saint exhibit a model clean and beautiful in design and wonderful in perfectlon?" .

First Wagon Built

in County

to Town for Relic

Presented

Board of public works was today reminded that this is Richmond's centennial year when the first wagon was built in Wayne county, one hundred years ago, was presented to the city with the , understanding that it was to be preserved as a relic. The wagon, built by Nathan HawkIns, one of the first settlers of the county, was presented to the city by Henry S. Roberts and his son, Frank Roberts, descendants of Nathan Hawkins. It is to be kept at Glen Miller park, where the Nathan Hawkins log house is also being preserved. Bavis Expresses Thanks, i President Bavis of the board expressed the city's appreciation of the valued gift. He said the wagon possessed great sentimental value, being one of the very few relics of Richmond's pioneer days now owned by the city. ... "My great uncle, Nathan Hawkins, constructed this wagon at a smithy built by him on what is now the site of Webster, the first smithy in Wayne county," Frank Roberts said. "The bed of the wagon, which was of the old prairie schooner style, is gone but the spokes, the hubs and the axlee are the same as my great uncle put Into the wagon. The wagon was used by my grandfather, my father and by myself but its days of active service are now over. "Nathan Hawkins built the log house now kept at the Glen and my

father and myself would like to have the old wagon kept with this cabin. The cabin, as you know, was the first school house in the county but was used at first as a home by Nathan Hawkins and his family. It was built just below the boundry of the Indian lands. "Hawkins had taken a' section of land in the Indian territory but when the Tecumsah war started he abandoned his claim and moved below the Indian land territory, building the log house to. live in. He lived in this cabin from. 1812 to 1813, then moved to his claim, which is now a part of Webster township, constructing a smithy. The wagon we are presenting the city Was built in 1816, the same year that the city of Richmond was founded." The ancient wagon was one of the features of the Richmond auto show parade Saturday afternoon.
