Paying the Cost Not only adults, but children also are forced to pay the toll of Europe's bloody war. The saddest result of the war in Serbia is the large number of children who lost their parents, a correspondent writes from Nish. Nearly seven thousand waifs, whose ages range from a few weeks to fourteen years, have been gathered up by the German, Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian troops and are now taken care of in hospitals and temporary asylums. The fathers and mothers of many, of the little ones are undoubtedly, dead, but a majority of the children simply were separated from their parents on the flight to' mountains of Albania. In some cases the parents have already returned and claimed their babies. Several hundred boys, aged eleven to fourteen years, were armed and had been fighting in the trenches when they fell into the hands of the Teutonic allies and the Bulgarians, but on account of their youth they are not treated as prisoners of war. Nearly six hundred of the children have died in the camps and asylums in which they found temporary homes.

"Only the Best Is Good Enough The European war has taught the belligerents thrift. Its influence has forced the American

people to realize that there may come a day when we must, retrench. The Philadelphia North American suggests that economy must be taught children in the following : The old idea that "there's more where this came from" still obtains amongtoo many people. Coupled with the equally costly notion that "only the best (is good enough for us," this has done much to lift the cost of living to a figure that is causing many people to wonder how they can adapt themselves to new conditions. "If you want to know one of the reasons for the constantly mounting expense of running a household, take a 'walk any day through the alleys of Philadelphia and life the lids of fifty garbage pails," said Mrs. Scott recently. "If you want to go back of this, stand around in any big market any morning and see how ignorantly the average woman buys meats, vegetables and fruits. And if you would find the connecting link in this chain of wastefulness, peep into the kitchens where this poorly bought food is being carelessly or wastefully prepared." It is a fact, easy enough to figure out if one will take the time, that this waste, which begins in the average American home and naturally extends to the fields, the shops and the markets of the nation, is the costliest burden we have to bear. It is a fact that the foremost educators in this land, headed by. the venerable Doctor Eliot, of Harvard, are agreed that from now on one of the chief aims of our school system must be the education in everyday economics of the more than 20,000,000 boys and girls who constitute the learning forces of today and will be the leading forces of tomorrow. "Every school boy and girl should be taught how to market, how to buy and how to sell," says one of these experts. "They should be taught to buy at home. There's got to be better team work. The people of this country are in no shape to waste the country's resources."

LYRIC. Once in a great while a real comedy comes out of the west. This Victor two-reeler was written and produced by Francis Ford, and with two hundred raring, tearing college boys from Leland Stanford and the University of California to put "pep" into the scenes, there isn't a moment of dullness in the whole picture. What these college boys don't do to the police force of the town in which they go to school isn't worth telling. They tear up every barber pole in the town and the police are powerless to stop them. There is more genuine laughter in the situations of "Orders is Orders,' at the Lyric tonight, than in a dozen slapstick comedies. The action swings along at a breezy gait, and one feels an intense sympathy with the young college boys. Their fun is of the rough, sophomore sort, which conies with downy upper lips and the irresponsibility of youth, but it "gets" one nevertheless.

PARIS, March 24. Two German submarines have been sunk near Gibralter, according to information received here today. A French scout ship met a neutral collier near the Morrocan coast supplying five submarines with petrol. The British naval authorities were notified and war ships were sent out. The collier was captured and two of the sub

marines were destroyed but the other!

three got away.

TRAIN SCHOOL BOYS

NEW YORK, March 24. The National School Camp association plans to give military training to thousands of school boys of 12 years and upward, at a camp on Staten island this summer. Every boy will be obliged to buy his uniform and mess kit, but these will not exceed in cost more than $3.50 or $4. One hundred thousand circulars are being printed for recruiting purposes. It is intended to make the movement a national one.

In some people there are sharp pains in the back and loins, distressing bladder disorders and sometimes obstinate dropsy. The uric acid sometimes forms into gravel or kidney stones, hen the uric acid affects the muscles and joints it causes lumbago, rheumatism, gout of sciatica. Write Dr. Pierce at once, send 10 cents for large trial package, or 50 cents for full treatment of "Anuric" or ask your druggist for it. During digestion uric acid is absorbed into the system from meat eaten, and even from vegetables. The poor kidneys get tired and backache be

gins. This is a good time to take "Anuric," ,the new discovery of Dr. Pierce for kidney trouble and backache. Neglected kidney trouble is responsible for many deaths, and insurance company examining doctors always test the water of an applicant before a policy will be issued. Have you ever set aside a bottle of water for twenty-four hours? A heavy sediment or settling sometimes indicates kidney trouble. The true nature and character of the disease, especially those of the kidneys and urinary organs, can often be determined by a careful chemical analysis and microscopical examination this is done by expert chemists of the Medical Staff of the Invalids' Hotel. If you wish to know your condition send a sample of your water to Doctor Pierce's Invalids Hotel, Buffalo, N. Y and describe your symptoms. It will be examined without expense to you, and Doctor Pierce and his staff of assisting physicians will inform you truthfully. Adv.
