Captain New remarked. "We entered politics about the same time. We lived in the same precinct in Indianapolis, and when I became precinct committeeman of my party he was appointed to the same office in the Democratic organization. When I became county chairman Taggart became Democratic county chairman. At the same time we were chosen state chairmen of our respective parties. Then when Taggart was selected as Democratic national chairman I was elected Republican national chairman. Now I have been nominated a candidate for the United States senate and Tom has been appointed a United States senator. When we moved out of the precinct where we had lived so many years we became .neighbors in another precinct." New Visits Meredith. A good part of yesterday afternoon Captain New was in the company of Linus P. Meredith, who was Watson's county manager during the primary campaign. "When I came here during the campaign Linus told me he was for Jim Watson and he was going to give me a good beating in Wayne county, and he almost did so," Captain New remarked laughingly. "When the returns indicated my nomination he was among the first to call me up and pledge his support to me." "Captain, there won't be anything to it if the Republicans do a little harmonizing up in Chicago next June; I mean give the progressive crowd a candidate for president they can support," Meredith put in. "Why I would even stand for Teddy if we find it good policy to nominate him." With a broad grin the former chairman of the Republican national committee listened to Meredith but he made no comment as to his views on the probable Republican presidential nominee.
