Dwindling Jim It is just ten years since Jim Watson's politi cal stature began to dwindle.

Twelve years ago in the election of 1904, the

year of Roosevelt's great majority, Watson was

re-elected to congress from this district by a majority of about 7,500. Following this election began the historic fight of J. Bennett Gordon i against "Our Jim." At the election of 1906 as a ! result of Gordon's expose of Watson's record in congress, he. barely scraped through for another ' term with 1,500 majority. In 1904 Wayne county endorsed Watson by a majority of 4,000. In 1906 it repudiated him by giving him the pitiful minority of only 346. Watson saw the handwriting on the district i wall. He quit district politics for the state arena. In 1908, after persuading one of his best friends

not to seek the office by the tale that he was down and out in the sixth district and it was the governorship or starve, he won the nomination for governor on the Republican ticket. As is well remembered Taft carried Indiana that year for the presidency by 10,000 majority. Watson lost it for governor by 25,000. Again Wayne county registered her protest against Watsonism. He only received a majority here of 564 votes and Taft carried the county by 2,'fcOO votes. Down and out in both district and state ft was up to Watson to do or starve. And he didn't starve. Impressed by his past actions in behalf of the people he represented while in congress, the big interests gave him a lucrative job lobbying in the famous Payne-Aldrich tariff session of 1909. Following this Watson returned to Indiana, expensively remodeled his house at Rushville and boasted of how much he had cleaned up lobbying at Washington. People who remember; the infamous disclosures of the Mulhall investigation obtained a splendid insight into "Our Jim's" career as a lobbyist.

In the 1910 election Watson, for once in his ! political life, was not a candidate for political ! office. Judge W. O. Barnard, however, who had ' succeeded Watson in congress in 1908 and who had voted for the Payne-Aldrich tariff bill in this election was badly defeated and the district for the first time in years was represented in congress by a Democrat,, the present incumbent, Finley Gray. In 1912, however, Watson jumped before the political limelight and shown publicly as he never before had. That was the year he was one of the ringleaders in that saturnalia of political chicanery known as the National Republican Convention. From the time he tried and partly succeeded in this district's convention to defraud Roosevelt's supporters of their honestly elected delegates down through the entirely successful similar attempt at the state convention and. on down to the gigantic scale of political fraud and downright stealing of the peoples' rights at the infamous Chicago convention, Watson consistently stood for Taft and" all that was bad and rotten in the Republican party. The result ? Taft was nominated and Roosevelt on the Progressive ticket beat him in Indiana 160,000 to 108;000 votes. Wayne county, Watson's Nemesis, gave his candidate, Taft, 1600 votes and Roosevelt received 4,400. And Watson campaigned in the county for Taft, too. It is no wonder that after this series of whacks from Wayne, Watson at New Castle

referred to the people of Wayne county as, we are euphonistically speaking, damphools.

In 1914 "Our Jim" orated over Indiana for the Republican nominees who had the nerve to accept that party's nominations. He dodged the defeats of that year. In this year of grace, 1916, however, he is again running around in circles trying to get back to the political pie counter via the senatorial route. Watson started out as legitimately as is possible for him in the three-cornered fight at the state primary, Robinson and New being the other candidates. New beat Watson fairly and squarely in the primary by a plurality of 7,000 votes. The state law, however, declares the winner of a primary must have a majority. Consequently New as the plurality candidate of the party at the primary must be confirmed as the Republican nominee for senator at the state convention. Rendered desperate by this latest manifestation of his dwindling political fortunes, Watson, trumping up charges of fraud on the part of New's supporters in the twelfth district and in Marion county, announced that for that reason and inasmuch as so many people had voted for him in the primary he felt it incumbent -upon himself to carry the fight to the convention and there seek to defeat Harry New. Yet New's primary vote of 95,000 added to Robinson's vote of 25,000 gives a total of 120,000 voters who do not want Jim Watson to be the Republican party's nominee for senator. This is very conclusive evidence, too, for it is .33,000 votes more than the 87,000 who were deluded into thinking that Watson would be a tower of strength to their party this fall.

TURK WINS GIRL OF TEUTON PARENTS

BERLIN, March 16. The -Wieibad-ener Anzelger" announce the engagement of Mlsa Hedwlg Laufer, the daughter of a Wealthy manufacturer of Frankfort, to Feked Effendl, a young Turkish artillery officer. The Turk was severely wounded on Galllpoll last August When he left the hospital at Constantinople he was sent to the home for convalescent officers at Wiesbaden, where Miss Laufer was a Red Cross nurse. . The Turkish captain fell In love with the fair nurse who Is eighteen years old, and won her heart. The parents of the young woman at first strenuously objected to the match but gave their consent when they learned that their future son-in-law, who was educated in German and Austrian private schools and universities, comes from a distinguished and wealthy family. The wedding has been postponed until after the war, as the captain has received orders to return to his regiment at once.

MUNCIE CITY HALL DECLARED

UNSAFE

MUNCIE, Ind., March 16. Muncie is wondering today, what it will do for an official home, for an order has been received from the state fire marshal's 'office that the present city hall has been condemned and must be torn down in ninety days. The building is one of the city's landmarks. It is understood that Mayor Bunch will call a special meeting of the council next week at which time some action will be taken on the proposed $125,000 municipal building.

Then Senator Shively died and there is the resulting vacancy thus created to be filled as well as the regular contest between Harry New and Senator Kern. Avidly, Watson, before the dead senator's body was cold, was announced by his friends as a candidate for the new nomination the Republicans must now make. Furthermore, these friends are urging Watson's nomination because, they say, the primary vote shows that 87,000 voters want him. After his showing up as such a poor loser by planning to defeat in the convention the man who fairly beat him in the primary, it is extremely doubtful if even a majority of those 87,000 are so equally unsportsmanlike and unashamed as now to want Watson the nominee of their party for senator. At any rate there were, as is seen -above in the total vote for New and Robinson, 120,000 voters who do not want Jim Watson as the candidate of their party for the senatorship rendered vacant by the death of Senator Shively. Meantime the names of two other Republicans are gaining increasing mention as contestants for this nomination for senator. They are Will Hays, the present state chairman of the party and Judge Quincy Meyers, one of the recent unsuccessful candidates for governor. Both are a type of clean Republicans who would grace the office to which they aspire. Watson's final political doom is upon him. His strength has steadily declined these past ten years and the fault is all his own. He has not kept faith with the humble people who entrusted political power into his keeping. Instead of seeking to follow their will he has persistently sought to impose his own will Upon them. No better illustration of this fundamental weakness of Watson's could be asked for than his plan to wrest the senatorial nomination, fairly won in the primary," from Harry New in the convention. Such untrustworthiness merits and finally meets its just reward. Watson will find this is true when the Republican state convention shortly meets and does not nominate him for either senatorship nor for any office. He will find that his power has dwindled to the vanishing point. Like the little islands of snow on the north slope or the last flickering flame from the puddle of tallow that was a candle, Watson's availability for even the nomination for justice of the peace in Rush county, much less for senator from Indiana, will melt away or puff out in the nearing convention. . Dwindling Jim is all in.

NAME IS LEFT OUT

BERLIN. March 17. Field " Marshal von Hindenburg is not mentioned in the last edition of "Wer Ist's," the German "Who's Who." Former editions of the work contained a short biography of the great arnJyJeader, but his name was omitted by the editor after he had retired from active service four years ago. When the last edition of the book went to press Hindenburg won his great victories of Tannenburg and the Mazurlan lakes, and was commender-In-chief of the German armies on the eastern front, but this apparently was not sufficient to win him back his place in the roster of prominent Germans.

Socialists are getting busy in the cause of peace. Two German Socialist members of the Reichstag recently visited the Hague and Amsterdam. Exactly what they did has never been allowed to leak out. Their visit was closely followed by visits from leading Belgian and Spanish Socialists, while the Dutchmen are believed to be trying to get in touch with the French, Austrian and Italian 'comrades,' through the intermediary of their leader, Troelstra, who is, and has been for some time, in Switzerland.

Be Careful in Using Soap on Your Hair

Most soaps and prepared shampoos contain too much alkali, which is very injurious, as it dries the scalp and makes the hair brittle. The best thing to use is just plain mulsified cocoanut oil, for it is pure and entire' greaseless. It's very cheap, and beats the most expensive soaps or anything else all to pieces. You can get that at any drug store, and a few ounces will last the whole family for months. Simply moisten the hair with water and rub it in, atout a teaspoonful is all that is required. It makes an at andance of rich, creamy lather, cleanses thoroughly, and rinses out easily. The hair dries quickl;- and evenly and id soft, fresh looking, bright, fluffy, wavy, and easy to handle. Besides, it loos 3ns and takes out every particle of dust, dirt and dandruff. Adv.
