THE STORY OF "ZOE"
Lady Warren wap , one of those women who always spoke of "we women" and "you men." She waa an impulsive, good-natured creature, very effected and very foolish. One either liked her exceedingly and was her slave, or equally disliked her and avoided her. There was no middle course. Crawley was sorry to admit that he must be placed In the second category. Lady Warren irritated him beyond endurance. She gushed, and he hated gushing women. She was appallingly ignorant, and insisted on talking of things about which she , knew nothing. Also she imagined she could sing, and insisted on Inflicting her shrill, soulless voice upon him on every available occasion. Her best friend and her worst enemy summed her up as "co absolutely good-natured." But Crawley abominated good-natured people. Lady Warren, was, in his opinion, the apothesis of the class. In her appearance she was loud, without being exactly vulgar. Of course she could not be vulgar. She 'was the daughter of a tenth baron, and the mother of Eva. In her time ' she had been pretty, and was still far from being passe, and looked, ' without any very pronounced artificial aid, much younger than her forty years. Her hair was golden; her eyes were fclue. There were no lines round her yes, no superfluity of flesh beneath her chin. Also she had kept her figure within boundB, and was, if not exactly as willowy as she had been when Sir Squire (then Mr. Squire) Warren, had married her, certainly not plump. "How is Eva?" asked Crawley with some embarrassment. He always felt embarrassed with Lady Warren. She adopted a caressing manner with him and always gave im the impression that she was going to kiss him. He Hears Alarming News from the Mother. Lady Warren's smile died. "Poor Eva's not up to the mark!" she said, with unaccustomed gravity. "I don't know what's the matter with the child." "But - I saw her yesterday . afternoon," Interrupted the artist. "I thought she looked particularly fit." "Well, all I can say is that she came home yesterday looking very seedy. Her father said she had eaten something that disagreed with her at some tea shop in Bond street, but then you know how faddy Squire is about diet, don't you? and she seemed so queer all yesterday evening. I was quite worried about her. She went, to bed about nine, complaining of a headache and sick feeling, poor child; and I saw her about midnight, and well, she had quite broken down, Noel. She was positively hysterical. I couldn't make her out. I wanted her to see a doctor, but she wouldn't hear of it, and insisted that she would be all right in the morning." Crawley bit his lip; his cheeks flushed. What a brute he had been! "Well, I was so nervous about the child," Lady Warren continued, "that I couldn't sleep for thinking about her and went to her room about three this morning. And, would you believe It, Noel, that tiresome girl had not even gone to bed! She was sitting up staring out of the window like a ttark, raving lunatic. Of course, I had to be very firm. I was, and didn't leave her until I tucked her up in bed. Well, this morning when I called in at her room on my way down to breakfast she had gone, and the servants .tell me she went out for a walk about eight o'clock without having any breakfast. So you can understand how worried I am." "Quite," answered Crawley grimly. "But hasn't she come back yet?" Lady Warren shook her head. "No." she said: "I only wish she had. Oh, I do hope no harm has come to her!" "Where is Sir Squire?" asked Crawley. "Does he know of this?" "Oh. yes; but you know Squire, and what ne thinks of us women. I don't suppose he'd trouble much if he heard the poor child had been run over and killed. He has no feelings, you know none at all." "I think I'll go out and try, and find her," said Crawley. His voice sounded husky.' There was a grim expression about his handsome face; his dark eyes gleamed angrily. "Oh, no, you won't, my dear Noel!" exclaimed Lady Warren. "You might as well look for a needle in a haystack. You've Just got time to come with me in the electric. I'm going up Oxford street and then back by Bond street. I've got such a lot of things I want to talk to you about. "You mustn't take much notice of what I have been saying. You know how foolish I am about Eva. No one knows what that dear child is to me." Lady Warren became theatrically dramatic. Tears clouded her blue eyes those eyes that were so like her daughter's. ' Crawley groaned inwardly, and would have had perforce to obey his dictatorial mother-in-law elect had not Eva walked into the morningroom at that precise moment. "Good gracious, Eva, where have you been?" Lady Warren rushed forward and seized her daughter's hand. "Why child, you look positively ill! What is the matter? Noel, doesn't she look ill?" Her ladyship turned to Craw Gentle Rubbing Helps Vencose Veins Rubbing the swollen veins nightly for about two minutes with a gentle upward stroke brings benefit to sufferers and is mighty good advice, says an authority. ley with her favorite dramatic gesture, but he did not hear or notice her. " He was looking at the girl. Certainly Eva Warren did not seem well. Her, usually rosy checks were pale, her eyes looked unnaturally large, and there were dark rims beneath them. She avoided his glance and his outstretched hand and looked at her mother. , "I'm feeling much better, dear," she said, almost boisterously and smiling with well-affected nonchalance. "Indeed, I feel quite all right again. I've had a long walk. It's a lovely day. Are you just going out?" 4 "Yes, dear; but surely you see who is here?" Lady Warren looked from one to the other in some bewilderment. "How do you do?" said Eva, at last deigning to take Crawley's outstretched hand. She appeared to look right through the man, and spoke coldly, as if he were the veriest stranger. Lady Warren's brow clouded. She gave Noel a swift look of inquiry and suspicion. "I am sorry you aren't well," said Crawley awkwardly. For the moment he could think of nothing else to say. "You haven't gone to Paris, then?" said the girl, and there was a touch of cynicism in her tone. Lady Warren- saved him from his embarrassed explanation by repeating vivaciously all that he had just told her. Eva listened much as she might have listened to news of some distant acquaintance. Then she turned, as if she meant to leave them, but her mother was quick to divine her inten
EARLY LIFE OF COUNTY Contributions on Pioneer Days Will Appear in This Column. SILK CULTURE PART II. When the cocoons are ripe they are assorted, a few both male and female are preserved to secure the butterfly which lay eggs for another crop of worms. In issuing the butterfly cuts the thread of the cocoon to effect its escape rendering it unfit for reeling, but it may be carded and spun into yarn to be used In the coarser fabrics. The remaining cocoons are exposed to heat or steam until the grubs are killed. They are then placed in shallow pans of water and the operator takes- a small twig and stirs the cocoons until he catches any loose ends which may be floating in the water. Trom three to five are twisted together with the fingers, then passed through a metal or glass eye in the reeling machine. If a break occurs the ends are lapped and adhere by their natural gumminess. ; The thread from a perfect cocoon measures from twelve to sixteen hundred yards. The process of reeling the silk is a very delicate operation and requires so much time it could not be made profitable in a country where labor demands a high price. I remember the Englishman, Mr. Fox and his two sons, who were weavers in the building at the corner of Twelfth and Main. When a young girl I called at their home, with older friends and they invited us to go through the silk factory. It is my recollection that the looms were too or three in number and were on the lower floor of the building. These Englishmen wove handkerchiefs for gentlemen and neckerchiefs of soft silk which took the place of the stiff stocks so long in use. They were folded a suitable width and laid under the standing collar from front to back, where the ends were crossed or passed through a buckle and the ends brought forward to be tied in a flat knot or bow knot according to taste. When satisfactorily arranged the buckle could be loosened and the necktie used for several days before it needed to be rearranged. I speak from experience as my father could never understand the mysteries of a bow knot and I early learned to tie his cravats for him. Mr. Fox also put on the market chinelle shawls . of two sizes, the smaller priced at twenty-five the larger at fifty-dollars. They were not woven in stripes or patterns, but presented a velvety surface of intermingled tints of pink, blue, green and WAY TO GAIN FLESH Conductor Tells How He Gained Flesh and Strength. I did so and rapidly regained health and strength, and yesterday I was weighed and it showed I had gained 26 pounds since taking Vinol. I cannot say enough in praise of Vinol, for what it has done for me." G. B. Sorber, 1513 Vine St., Scranton, Pa. Half-past one. I shall be back in about an hour. Will you stay?" He Accepts Her Invitation to Lunch. Crawley looked at Eva, but the girl was regarding the carpet with an ex pression of complete immobility. "Thanks," he said. "If I shall not be in the way, of course, I will stay, But you are ure I shall not put you out?" "In the way? Put us out? What an idea!" Lady Warren laughed and patted him affectionately on the back. "There, now. I'll leave you two to gether, she added, with a suddenly grave and anxious look. "Au revoir! Vaguely she felt that something was wrong; vaguely she realized that there was a rift within the lute. It was the last thing in the world that she suspected. A misunderstanding between Eva and Noel 4iad never for a moment entered into her calcula tion Anyhow, the only thing, and the best thing, to do, was to leave them alone to fight it out between them selves. The shawls were very soft and warm, but the warp which was of fine cotton thread was not strong enough for the weight of the silk. The shawls were easily injured and hard to repair. I think when Mr. Fox was leaving Richmond, he sold the stock on hand at about one-half price. In one of the county histories it is said that a daughter of Isaac Jones present ed a white silk handkerchief to the Honorable Henry Clay when he visit ed Richmond in 1844. Some of these handkerchiefs are still to be seen here also samples of vest patterns. Isaac Jones in 1845 removed the silk fac tory to Newport, Ky. The authorities consulted were the three published histories of Wayne county, an article in Chambers En cyclopedia, and a bulletin issued by the bureau of agriculture. ' SARAH A. WRIGLEY.
