LEONARD TELLS DETAILED PLAN OF SURVEY WORK
R. J. LEONARD, DIRECTOR OF THE SURVEY. The surrey office has completed plans for taking the Occupational Census of Richmond. Every employer in the city will receive within a few days two blanks which provide space for a complete enumeration of all occupations. For cities whose population in 1910 was. rated as over 30,000, the U. S. Census gives complete data showlng the number of men, women, boys and' girls in each profitable pursuit. For cities the size of Richmond, however, no such figures are available. The Census blanks which will be ncnt to stores, shops, factories, hotels and restaurants include space for information under three different heads. Census of Occupations. Under part one employers are requested to list all occupations followed in their establishment, and the nunber of men and women In each occupation. This list should include in detail everyone on the pay roll March first: The executive force, the office force, those In the manufacturing or sales departments, those who care for buildings, such as janitors, engineers or watchmen, and also all miscellaneous occupations.. Each occupation should be Hated under Its exact trade, name, for example: Copyist, salesman, silk counter, and machine operator ou drill press. Such general terms a "clerks' should be avoided for a clerk may be an office assistant, a salesman, a copyist or one who receives orders. Work of Youths Under 17. Tart two, concerns the work of jouug men and women under 17 years of age. This information is vital be
cause the young people of this age have most recently entered wage earning pursuits', and are thus the group for whom part time and continuation education might be provided. The survey desires to obtain the exact work done by the youthful workers, and facts of school and personal history. Afternoon and Vacation Jobs. How may my boy or girl earn money and remain in school, is one of the mofit vital questions to many parents. The survey seeks Information about all the jobB open to boys and girls before end after school or during vacation. A mere listing of these jobs is not sufficient, as we should know the time the job requires, the special training and experience required and also whether such jobs may lead to per
manent employment. Space for recording such facts Is provided under part three of the schedule. Promptness and Accuracy. ' All employers are urged to fill out the blanks accurately and promptly In order that the work of the Survey may r.ot be delayed.
