I first time that the horrors of - war were upon
them. Their alarm was soon assuaged to some extent, however, when they learned that there is now a two years' supply of the weed in England.
Notwithstanding this, their happiness was not
entirely restored because of the intimation that a stiff advance of prices would come. A reduction in paper and other importations, and an embargo on fruits stir discontent in other quarters. Publishers of the daily papers at once
began to arrange for an economical handling. of
the paper supply and an equitable apportionment to the different publications. Papers will be smaller, the number of cheap books will be les
sened and economy will be necessary m the use of sfatinnprv. wramrinff naner. etc. The fruit
regulation is criticised on ihe ground that fruit
should be regarded as a food necessity and shippers who lose a market, especially those in South
Africa who are just working up a trade, complain
loudly.
The purpose of the regulations is in part to
enforce economy among the people, but mainly,
it is understood, to leave more room for food
stuffs and munitions in ships reaching England
The mtes meanthat England is feeling the war
in its daily living and that there is anxiety in
high places about more matters than the proceed
ings of the armies at the front. Indianapolis
