Craze Hit Town in 1882

History of the game of roller polo the. sport so popufar In Richmond dates back to 1882 when such old timers as Mate- Dyers, John Willmms, James Martin, Charley Sell, Judie Gilchrist, Alva Henley, Cal Lankert, Charles Border, Oscar Williams and others formed the first representative Quaker crew. . . The polo craze hit Richmond in the fall of the year 1882 Just thirty-four years ago. There were two skating rinks at that time. The Park rink, located at Tenth and Main on the site now occupied by the Murray theatre building wa3 perhaps the first tkating rink. The old Henley rink was built about this time. Both rinks were represented by their respective teams -and each team had its contingent of backers. Muncie Proves Strong. And Richmond was not the only city in '(rested in the sport at that time. Minu ft, a rival of Richmond, was rep resented by a team the calibre of theQuaker crew. Racine and Junesville, Wisconsin teams, as well as Galesburg, Sidney, Greenville and Dayton, O., had teams. Anderson and Indianapolis became interested in the sport shortly afterwards. In those days as well as now M. C. . Henley was one of the moving spirits : of the game. Mr. Henley was instrumental in the organization of the old 1 Richmond "Coppock" team one of the : bst aggregations that ever represented Richmond. Roscoo Stevens, llili Patterson, Jeff Van Allen, Clyde and Roy Alexander formed the personnel of (hat team. An outstanding feature of the polo race in the Middle West was the championship series of games between Racine, Muncie and Richmond cities that by the way met in a similar series a month ago. After some of the best polo ever seen in the state Muncie emerged a victor with t lie Quakers trailing a fair second. Another series engaged in by Cincinnati, Sidney, Rncfne, Indianapolis and Richmond went to the Muncleites. Muncie then like now was classed as a top notcliCi Ycu:ift?r Tbcd Enters. Cluroncf .le:-;aup. mere famili;irl.v known aa "Shorty,", took a hand in the man.'!' incut ,ot' Ihe Richmond club's affairs. It wasn't long before! Jessup had lined up some of the old guard who in the succeeding years were to give Richmond the distinction of having, the best polo team in the United States. Ado Mansfield and Harney Uohcrty, friend:-! of Jessup, were induced to b'ave the Kast and come to Richmond. And along with this pair of defensive stars came Moran, lladley, George Hone, the Cunninghams. Senior and Junior. Kid "Ikey" Haughton was recriiited but a short time later. With this crew Jessup was in a position to clean up everything in night. In 1902 Jessup took his Quakers to Chicago where the local team took initial honors. A'year later Richmond copped out the championship bunting of the Western league. Muncie and Marion were Richmond's chief rivals iit that time. In the succeeding years, however, the NEW CASTLE WANTS TO MEET RICHMOND IN TOURNEY FINAL Richmond high school basketball rooters have a new worry. Now that it has been definitely decided by the local fan colony that the district championship lies between the Itichmond and New Castle teams and that Quakers and Henry county warriors, after trampling the lesser lights ntercd in the tourney, are to battle it out. in the final and deciding game Saturday night along comes some one v. ith the trouble instigator of: 'What if the schedule is arranged in mich n manner that Richmond and New Castle will necessarily meet in one of the preliminary games." New Castle, too. it seems, has thought or this matter. In a letter to the Palladium, members of the New Castle team, through Captain Gordon, have asked that Itichmond authorities take steps toward insuring a schedule that will enable the two championship contending teams to meet in the final and deciding game Saturday night. sport gradually waned in the Middle West and the year 1904 saw nothing but an occasional amateur game being played at Richmond. Attempts to revive the sport during 1905 till 1913 proved futile. In the summer of 1913 the Palladium carried a story to the effect that an attempt would be made to bring to life the game the following winter. The organization of the Richmond Polo League resulted, followed by inter-city matches between Richmend, Muncie, Indianapolis, Racine, ar.d now what appears to be the eventuality the organization next winter of a league that will include polo cities of states of the Middle West. HAUGHTON LED LOCAL RUSHERS IN OLDEN DAYS Of the many floral offerings accorded by the old-time polo fans of today to the championship Richmond five back in the balmy days of '02, .'03 and '04, little emphasis has ever been placed on the fact that the real stars of the team at that time were three Richmond players, men who are at the present time living in the city. Official records of the Western league show that Ikey "Kid" Haughton, the same individual who was kidded when he appeared here with the Indianapolis crew recently, was the star goal getter of the Richmond pennant winning club at that time. George Cunningham, Jr., who referees games at the Coliseum at the present time, lead the rushes of the league. Clarence Jessup, another son of Richmond, led the goal tends of the circuit. ! WHY HAIR FALLS OUT I 4 Dandruff causes a feverish irritation of the scalp, the hair roots shrink, loosen and then the hair comes out fast. To stop falling hair at once and rid the scalp of every particle of dandruff, get a 25-cent bottle of Danderine at any drug store, pour a little in your hand and rub well into the scalp. After a few applications all dandruff disappears and the hair stops coming out. Adv. URIC ACID IN MEAT CLOGS THE KIDNEYS Take a Glass of Salts if Your Back Hurts or Bladder Bothers. If you must have your meat every day, eat it, but flush your kidneys with salts occasionally, says a noted author ity who tells ua that meat forms uric acid which almost paralyzes the kidneys in their efforts to expel it from the blood. They become sluggish and weaken, then you suffer with a dull misery in the kidney region, sharp pains in the back or sick headache, dizziness, your stomach sours, tongue is coated and when the weather is bad you have rheumatic twinges. The urine gets cloudy, full of sediment, the channels often .get sore and irritated, obliging you to seek relief two or three times during the night. To neutralize these irritating acids, to cleanse the kidneys and flush off the body's urinous waste get four ounces of Jad Salts from any pharmacy here; take a tablespoonful in a glass of water before breakfast for a few days and your kidneys will then act fine. This famous salts is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia, and has been used for generations to flush- and stimulate sluggish kidneys, also to neutralize the acids in urine, so it no longer irritates, thus ending bladder weakness. Jad Salts is inexpensive; cannot injure, and make a delightful effervescent lithia-water drink. adv.
