Joseph Henabery, the actor who por-' trays President Lincoln in D. W. Griffith's historical spectacle. "The Birth of a Nation," was selected from twenty players who were coached and prepared for the part before the' choice was tirade. Mr. Lincoln's appearance and mannerisms were carefully counterfeited, even to the small, but interesting detail of the president reaching back for his shawl just a few minutes befor Wilkes Booth attacked him. It was a spring day in Washington, April 14, 18H5. but a late frost had set in that night and It was raw and cold. Mr. Lincoln felt the chill and drew the shawl around him. The first scene In "The Birth of a Nation" showing the war president, ia of Lincoln signing .the call for. 75,000 volunteers. Around him are his cabinet heads and private secretaries. Lincoln fully, realized '. the momentous character of the act that summoned federal troops to subdue the Individual sovereignty of rebellious states. After the deed was done and the attending Company departed he slowly buried his head In his hands as if in prayer. . " ' , PUMPKINS BURN

Steven Kuth has received an interesting letter from his son Wilbur at Rosthern, Sask., in which he describes winter conditions there, as follows: Dear Father: " Yours received and noticed that you are having very mild bunch of weather. Well Just the same here. We have had a nice winter as an average, but a little after New Year we had three days that were just a little unpleasant. We had been having about ten to twenty below and all at once it dropped to 57 below and the next day 66 and the next day 47 and since that it has been all the way from 10 to 30 below. . , The cold is not bothering much, but the roads as soon as broken are drifted in till the horse when happening . to get off the beaten track sinks in up to the belly, and in case there is a load being pulled, it is a case of that being upset but otherwise there is not more than 2 feet of snow in this district and along the Goose Lake line there is not enough for good sleighing and no snow until about January. There was some' scare about fuel shortage in many places and Saskatoon bnly had 840 tons on hand and other places the same i-e about three days run., Most dealers had orders in for quite a ; while but the shortage of miners and the heavy snows tying up the engines on the snow plows and necessary extra freights was the cause of the fuel shortage. , There was a passenger train held up in a snow drift about 4 miles above town for over 24 hours and it took two extra engines to get it out after plowing from town tap to it two or three times to clear the track. world first and sweep stake prizes again last year and has also developed another variety of wheat which yielded 80 bushels per acre under field conditions. Last year was a little slow in general lines of business and there was quite a few failures but every one expects next to be the best we have bad for three or four years. Labor is going to be high for a while as there were so many taken to the front that the unemployed problem is a thing of the past. Some time ago I started to write a long letter to the Palladium but did not get finished and we are getting too busy to erfjoy fighting a typemachine very long. WILBUR KUTH.
