ent assistants the work was done under 48 different methods. The old saying 'what is anybody's business is nobody's business' may well apply here and the community suffers." y
HEAR BOW EN TRIAL.
"The question of good roads affects every phase of community life," declared W. O. Jones, county road superintendent in his address this afternoon at the tri-couhty institute in Cambridge City. 'It has only been through the improvement of the roads that it has been possible to centralize the school system; good roads are also responsible f or better churches; cood roads make better markets, for the farmers can haul their products to market at any and all times cheaper than if ; they had to travel on poor roads; good roads make better towns and cities for they afford closer communication between the farmer and the cities' business men." Gives Automobile Credit. Superintendent Jones gives the automobile the , greatest credit for bringing about a demand for better roads. The rural route system has also made the demand for better roads and this demand is being answered in Wayne county, he declared. "To have good roads we must first have a good system of building them and maintaining them," said Mr. Jones. "Did you every know of a business as large as the county road system which runs its business without
having a head to it, or, in other words, a superintendent or manager.,,. Take the old county read "system, for instance,, back in 1913 and as far back as you care to' go; there was at that time about 200 miles of county roads with 48 assistant superintendents. Mileage under the care of ach one of them ranged from two to eight or ten. . . .... . . . "Who was at the head of the system at that time to manage and plan the work? - I happened to be one of those assistant superintendents for ten years prior to 1913 and most of the work was done at times when we could not work on the farms. NOBLESVILLE, Ind.; Feb. 9. Arguments are being heard today in the George Bowen case. It will probably go to the jury late this afternoon. Bowen is charged with the embezzlement of $2,700 from the defunct Hamilton Trust company.
How Mr. 'Davis Got Rid of a Bad Cough. "Some time ago I had a very bad cough," writes Lewis T. Davis, Blackwater, Del. "My brother McCabe Davis gave me a small ottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. After taking this I bought half a dozen bottles of it but only used one of them as the cough left me and I have not been troubled since." Obtainable everywhere. Adv.

I VEGETABLE CALOMEL
Vegetable calomel, extract of the root of the old-fashioned may-apple plant, does not salivate. As a fiver stimulator, it's great. It's s per. feet substitute for ordinary calo
mel (mercury); in fact, it's better. . -because its action is gentle instead of severe and irritating and it leaves no mean, disagreeable aftereffects. Physicians recognize this '. and prescribe may-apple root (pc -dophyllin, they call it) daily. Combined with four other stand- ' ard, all-vegetable remedies, may- -apple root may now be had at most -any druggist's in convenient sugarcoated tablet form by asking for , . Sentanel Laxatives. . If you forget the name, ask for the box that has the picture of the soldier on it. These tablets are small, easy to take and are really wonderful little performers. . They quickly clean out the poisons that are causing you headache, constipation, sour stomach, ' biliousness, dizzy spells, bad breath and coated tongue. They are mild.' They never gripe. And they are a bowel tonic
as well as a cleanser and liver regulator. A 10c box should last one several weeks. A Physician's trial package (4 doses) will be mailed you free if you write mentioning this advertisement. The Sentanel Remedies Co., 802 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky.

Among all the film actors playing historical characters in "The Birth of a Nation," spectacle to be seen at the Gennett theatre next , Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Howard Gaye and Donald Crisp have received the most
compliments on the faithfulness of
their work, the one as Generjl Robert K. Lee and the other as General U. S. Grant. The picture shows Genera! Lee surrendering to General Grant in the Wilmer-McLean mansion at. Appomattox Court House, Va., April 9. 1865. It is a most faithful reproduction of all the personages in the great historic scene and of the minute details of action. It is well known that' many supporters of the defeated confederacy-wished to prolong the struggle by means of a guerilla warfare similar to that used by the Boers toward the close of the Anglo-Boer war. In fact, John Wilkes Booth supposed that in killing Lincoln he would have the support of the south in a new struggle, But General Lee was of a different temper. He realized that the south had been beaten in a fair struggle on the fields of battle, and that prolonging the fighting would merely add to the horrors and miseries endured by his people. Therefore, after the battle of Five Forks he opened negotiations with Grant, and on the morning of April 9, under the budding apple trres of an Appomattox orchard were determined the terms of poace which were formally written down at the Wilmer-McLean house in the afternoon. Lee had dressed for his last public occasion with great care. Grant on the contrary lacked his full dress and appeared in the "fatigue" and dusty jack boots of the hard campaign. Strangely enough. General Lee had no pencil to write with. A pocket ink stand and pen were lent by an officer of the general staff, and it was with these that the historic dorument of surrender was written. Afterward an effort was made to arrest and indict
Lee for treason, but Grant, who knew Lee's nobility of character and how he had fulfilled to the letter all the surrender obligations, prevented any such disgraceful sequel to the great event.

(Beauty Culture.) Hairs can be easily banished from the skin by this quick, painless method: Mix into a sti-. paste some powdered delatone and water, spread on hairy surface and in 2 or 3 minutes rub off, wash the skin and it will be free from hair or blemish.
