Crawley frantically tears up the pictures of Zoe.
"Good-bye, my son!" laughed Brooke. "You look considerably better--than when I came in upon you, last night. Cheer up, old man!" He lowered his voice. I "fibe , Isn't, wprth thinking about A woman like thai will say ar.ything. Put her out of your mind, and go and see your Eva." "Shut up," said Crawley, frowning. "I -wish you would keep that to yourself, Brooke. I was mad last night.
Forget ail about it." The two men had been alone for a few' moments. Diana Brooke was despatching a telegraij to her dressmaker. . She came up at this moment. "So you can't persuade him to come with us, Godfrey?" she Inquired archly. "No. my dear; he's obdurate.' 'Well, god-bye, then, Mr. Crawley. I am no glad to have met you. Do come down again soon," she smiled bewitchingly. "It is awfully good of you," the man murmured. "Four o'clock,' she whispered as they shook hands. He nodded. Brooke's back was turned for the moment. At last Crawley escaped In a taxi, and told the cabman to drive him to 40A Grosvcnor road, and sank back in the rab and literally gasped with relief. The strain had been fearful. He had barely slept an hour all last right. The position had been intolerable. ; The very fact of being under Godfrey Brooke's roof was unbearable. He bad sat up until about half-past one talking to Brooke after Diana had left them together in the cozy smoking-room of ' The laurels, and had listened to Brooke's eulogies of his wife. What a wonderful woman she was in Brooke's eyes, and what a pearl among women! How he loved her! How blindly he worshipped her! With what dog-like devotion he regarded her! And. withal, with what sublime trust! Every word and -look jf Brooke concerning Ysr went to Crawley's heart like a knife-thrust in an old wound. He war a man of very hlghlv strung imnglnatlon. and the
inldnieht talk with his old friend had caused him almost physical pain as well as mental torture.- Brooke, was full of plans for the future, and in every plan Diana had her place and "Ah, Crawley, old man," he said, emotion trembling in his voice, "it's a great thing to have a home. I'm a born wanderer a gypsy. I don't suppose I shall ever settle down anywhere for long. But for all that, I like to feel I've got a little place somewhere on the face of the earth
to come back to when I'm tired. "How I used ta long for It la6t summer when I was out there in the (ngo sweltering under that precious sun! Yes, Crawley, there's something in every man's heart that responds to the Idea of home. 'My ain fireside,' with a good, pure: woman waiting there for you. That's what's kept nie going, and what will again, I haven't any doubt." These words repeated ' themselves in Crawley's mind with a peculiar insistance He Tries to Think of a Way Out. What a hopeless muddle it all was! All last night he had tried to find a
way out of it a way that was nonorable and right. He blamed himself far more than he blamed the woman, and yet, at the same time., he realized that he was not altogether fair ,o himself. How could he possibly have known? Even now the thing seemed incredible and unreal, and there were moments when the sense of unreality was so forcible that he expected to awake and find himself sitting before hU fire in his Grosvenor road rooms. It was about half-past one when he
let himself into his flat, and Hutton, his man, rn.et.him. In .. tie . hall,- and gave him some letters and telegrams, which he tossed on to a table, and told Hutton to get .him, something to eat. Then he went into his study and flung himself dejectedly into his armchair before the newly-lighted fire. It was a brilliant spring day a day of clouds and sunlight, a day to rejoice a painter's heart. Crawley had much work to do; but there was to be no painting today. He had much
more serious business in hand. He looked angrily at the clock a beautiful seventeenth century, grandfather's clock of exquisite manufacture. He had only recently bought it at Christie's. "Nearly two and a half , hours before she will be here," he muttered, to himself. "What, in the name of goodness, am I to do In the meantime?" He rose Impatiently and paced the room. He stopped every now and then at the window and looked out across the Thames to the great pottery works opposite. Then he went into his studio. He was restless, irritable, and altogether upset. He started absently picking up sketches from a bulky portfolio lying open on the lounge seat In a great bay window at the corner. Nearly every other sketch was a study of Zoe one head and shoulders; Zoe, full length; Zoe in hat and furs; Zoe in ball dress; Zoe's arms, back, bust Zoe in every conceivable pose and posture. Zoe draped and und raped; Zoe as herself; Zoe as "Aph
rodite," as "Circe"; Zoe as "Sin," as some of them; some finished, others but rough impressionist sketches, or careful studies of anatomical detail. "If Brooke were to- see those!" he groaned. Crawley's eyes fell on a large canvas leaning against the wall. It was his first study in oils of his famous "Circe." It was a moot point
Jn his mind whether this one were not
indeed a superior picture of the one Leveredge and Maberley had bought of him for a thousand guineas down. As he stared at it Brooke's words rang In his ears. That was Brooke's wife, the idol of his heart and life
that woman there, who sat shamelessly surrounded by swine the swine
that had once been men.
It was a startling likeness. To
Crawley the woman wasthe sorceress of Aeea. daughter of Sol and Per-
seis, who had made Ulysses forget h!s glories in her arms. He had meant
to call his chef-d'oeuvre "Sin."
With consummate skill he had nalnted the woman lying there in
wild abandon. She was "Circe." But now now he saw the awfulness of It. That lovely creature lying amidst her
swine was Mrs. Godfrey Brooke.
He stared at the picture with a fresh and .even more poignant horror.
If Brooke were to see that? And his "Circe1' was not all. There was that lovely thing on the easel in the corner a smaller picture, that at first looked like a beautiful copy of Giorgione's "Sleeping Venus" of Dresden the perfect Expression of godlike beauty. The "Sleeping Venus" of Giorglone was not so beautiful as Crawley's "Sleeping Zoe." There she was on his easel, lying there in sub
lime repose, her eyes closed in sleep that sugested happy dreams. There, too, the likeness was perfect, for Zoe had needed no - idealizing. She was herself the type of perfect beauty. If Brooke were to see that! , He Destroys Each of His Masterpieces The thought maddened him into doing a purely hysterical thing a thing which afterwards he regretted.. Calmly and deliberately he went about his work of destruction. He started upon the drawings, the delicate studies of ,
detail, the bold impressionist sketches and tore up and burnt everything that had any connection with her. The artistic loss of that portfolio was incalculable, and he did not do his work without mental suffering and regret, for Zoe had represented to him so much. It was like rooting out of his being great ideals. All the time he kept saying to himself: ; "Brooke must never know never." Hutton disturbed him in the midst of his work to tell him that he bad
served lunch; but Crawley barfly noticed the man, who stood and stared incredulously at his master systematically tearing and mutilating and destroying beautiful sketches an pictures. They represented nothing artistic to Hutton, whose Ideas of beauty and art were about on the level of the ordinary man in the street, but they represented money to Lim. That horrified him. He murmured a faint protest. (To Be Continued.)
His Experience Reminds Him Of Childhood Pays "To feel miserable and discouraged over continued poor health and then to enjoy relief almost over night is
like having one of those miracles come true, that I often read about in fairy tales when I was a child," exclaimed William Gluck, 218 North Limestone street, Springfield, O. "I had about given up all hope of ever getting well, again." Words can't describe my sufferings from stomach and liver trouble. I thought, at times, that the pains in my stomach during attacks would set me crazy. I was afraid to eat any substantial foods because I knew what the results would be. I was losing weight and my
friends would always remark, onJ
meeting me, how bad I looked. "You can't imagine, unless you have been a victim of acute stomach trouble, too, what it means to lay awake
night after night with a continual grumbling sensation In your stomach. I was fast losing my old time 'pep' and felt tired out almost all the time. "I tried various kinds of remedies but not until I took Tanlac did I notice any benefit in my condition. After taking the first bottle I noticed that I could sleep better nights, my appetite had Improved and my lost energy was fast returning. I was delighted with its effects on me that I bought a second and a third bottle'. I am now on my third bottle and Tanlac has entirely driven away those horrible stomach pains, much to my satisfaction. "You ask me whether I would endorse It for others? Well, I should say I do. I don't believe there is an
other remedy in the world that can accomplish half the things Tanlac does in cases of stomach . and liver troubles, at least." Mr. Gluck's testimonial to the mer
its of this wonderful reconstructive tonic, appetizer and invigorant Tanlac, is but one of hundreds that are
received daily by men and women in
all walks of life, who are grateful for
the benefits they have derive'! through this Master Medicine.
Tanlac is being especially Intro
