BY FRANK DUNING.

With the district and state basketball tournaments of the Indiana High School Athletic association but a matter of weeks in the offing, basketball fandora is preparing to pet out its dope sheet and figure some probable results. With every high school team in the itate nearing the completion of the regular schedule of games, the some 215 teams already entered In the state tournament sectionals are making plans for the final campaign at Bloomington. But fourteen teams of the several hundred entered will make the trip to Bloomington. The ,way the dope journal balances at this distant date, some fifty teams have an almost equal chance of copping the state title. Dope this year is as variable as the weather on an April day. Rankest kinds of upsets have featured the season. Teams that were counted on to make clean sweeps of thrlr f-chedules have fallen down miserably Other teams, considered among the lesser quantities, have displayed surprising form. An example cf the varied performance of Class A tPams is Thorntown and Wingate, champs, respectively for the last two and three years. Both teams are practically out of the running. Richmond Will Win. Coming back to a more local angle of the question. Richmond high, of course, will win the Sixth district tournament at Richmond. New Castle H. S., only dangerous rival, has been completely outclassed this season, and only the rarest brand of the unexpected will enable the Rose City crowd to make the Bloomington trip. According to the dope sheet, N. H. S. will run second in the Richmond tour- j

tle that will determine the 1916 high school champ five of Indiana, which teams will the Red and White warriors have to contend with?

The answer in all probability is the names of the teams given In the above state tourney summary, and particularly Crawfordsville. Crawfordsville Is Strong. And what Bhow haB the Crawfordsville high to win the state classic. If you were to ask seven, members of the Richmond high varsity they would in all probability reply unanimously, vehemently and with much questionable enthusiasm, "A mighty good one." ' Crawfordsville high, a school that has always been represented by athletic teams the peer of anything in the state, has one sweet combination of leather tossers this year. Any member of the Richmond high basketball squad will tell you that the personnel of that team includes a crew

of six-footers who make up the huskiest team in the high circles of the state today. The 61-22 defeat handed the Richmond five by C. H. S. quintet is not taken as a basis in judging the strength of the team. Every backer of the R. H. S. knows the facts surrounding the game at Crawfordsville and is confident that with its regular varsity line-up R. H. S. can even that old score. Outside of Crawfordsville a number of other teams loom up especially dangerous at present. Wiley high of Terre Haute, has made an enviable record this year and should the Quakers survive until the finals as In all probability they will, these two teams are to fight it out for the honor of meeting Crawfordsville in the game that will decide the state title Satur-

And when the Quakers do land in I day evening, March 18.

CHARLES TOHLE REPLIES TO LIBERTY CHALLENGE

Relative to that Liberty challenge, Charles Towle, faculty manager of the Richmond High school basketball team submits the following to the Palladium sport department. "There have been a number of inquiries in the last few day as to why the challenge of the Liberty High school for a basketball game with Richmond High school has not been accepted. "Now, as you no doubt know, our schedule is always made up several months before the opening of the season and this late In the day we have no open dates. Had the Liberty management asked for a date before our schedule was completed I have no hesitancy in saying we wouid gladly have taken them on for It would undoubtedly have boosted our average. Having no open dates co-incident -

with theirs, we offered them a gamei

with our second team, which by the

way would have been no mean adversary for the Union county aggregation. This well meant offer, was scornfully rejected as "they did not care to play a second team." "Their chief claim to their right to play us lies in the fact that they defeated Hagerstown High Bchool tjm two weeks ago by a score of 34 to 33. They don't mention the fact that Hagerstown's chief mainstay, their husky center, was out of the game. "Now here is the dope Another minute of play in the same game would have resulted in a victory for H- H. S. who played the L. II. S. boys off their feet in the second half, but could not overcome the lead because of lack of time. Last Friday night with the regular lineup and playing the most consistent game of the season, Hagers

town took the small end of a. 48 to n score at Richmond. And they didn't even make it interesting for Richmond. "Now where does Liberty High school enter. If they can las long enough perhaps they will get to play us during the coming tourney. CHARLES TOWLE, Faculty Manager R. H. S. basketball team.

INDUSTRIAL LEAGUE PLANS FOR SEASON

Permanency of the recently launched Industrial or Factory league 1b assured now that promoters of the new organization have secured the partial co-operation of members and officers of the late Saturday Afternoon league. The S. A. L., it appears, is a thing of the past, and the new circuit has the entire field. At a committee meeting of the new league last night matters pertaining to the adoption of a constitution and by-laws were settled and adopted. A directors' meeting will Jbe held at the Y. M. C. A. Thursday night at which time a complete

organization of the new league will be effected. Officers of the S. A. L. who have not become affiliated with the new organization have as yet offered no opposition. Neither, have .they, decided to continue the life of the S. A. L. All parties concerned seem content to let the matter droo.

Dangerous Corners Worry Ball Fives

Minor if not serious injuries to at least one member of every team that has appeared on the Coliseum floor this season, injuries that were received at the east goal, "the most dangerous spot of any floor in the stats," have caused local players, fans and team managements alike to demand that some arrangement be made whereby the element of danger at this point will be eliminated. At no time during the entire present season has a game been played on the Coliseum floor without one or mors players being temporarily "knocked out" after coming in contact with the sharp corners of the walnscoating at this point. That no one has received serious or permanent Injury at this dangerous point may be considered fortunate and remarkable. , Two plans have been suggested whereby the element of danger may be removed without hindering the game in any way. The best plan suggested is that the east goal be moved further out on the floor. By moving the west goal back to give the proper length of playing space, the basketball court would be better centered than it is now. Another suggestion is that the corners of the walnscoating and goal post at the east goal be padded.

EARL1IAC1 EAGER TO MEET I. U.

Despite the fact that the Quakers hold out little hope of defeating the state crew, Earlham rooters are making big preparations for the Indiana Earlham basketball game at the Coliseum Wednesday night. Chapel and "thusm" meetings this afternoon and tomorrow morning will be held to revive some of the spirit that predominated Earlham athletics in more successful years past. ; ! . i Indiana comes here with well balanced, speedy and experienced crew. Under the tutelage of Coach Willoughby the Crimson squad has rounded into one of the leading basketball squads of the state: The state team is prac

tically a veteran one, at least four members of last year's squad appearing In the lineup of the Bloomington quintet this season.
