' gs -'hS: 1: " s-!'"'-ii if 'nfi '

One of the most active Anglo-Americans in war work has proved to be Lady Allastalr Innes-Kerr, the former Miss Eleanor Breese of New York, who married a brother of the Duke of Roxburgh. While the energy of many wealthy women who attempted relief work of various sorts at the beginning of the war has flagged, this has not been the case with Lady Innes-Kerr and she still devotes a large part of each day to her tauks.

The most northerly coal mine in the world is one owned by an American company at Advent Bay, on the east coast of Spitzbergen.

JUDGE GRAY

A family of Belgian refugees is happy today because Mrs. George H. Gould went for a walk. Mrs. Gould who is the wife of a wealthy retired leather merchant saw Harry Rudder and his wife trying to earn a few pennies by playing a violin and 'cello in the street She inquired and found they had a remarkable pretty little girl, Madeline, six years old. . Mrs. Gould- had the littl-s family to dinner and learned their story. De Rudder, who is twenty-six ' years old and a skillful musician, played in the Antwerp Opera House. He was prosperous and comfortable with his wife and little girl. But the war drove him from Belgium. He landed here, penniless. While the parents were playing in the street an agent of the Children's Society arrested them because, he

said, little Madeline was soliciting

money. Mrs. Gould came to the rescue and De Rudder and his wife were set free. Little Madeline, who speaks English well and is able to play the violin, is now at Mrs. Gould's house where she will be taken care of until De Rudder can find a position.

WATCH FOR AIRCRAFT.

AMSTERDAM, Feb. 8. Warnings are being sent from Berlin to cities throughout western and northwestern Germany to take precautionary measures against reprisal air attacks by the allies for the recent raids over London and Paris.

' "What do you think of the meet

ing? questioned a reporter; "More like a ; Republican meeting, to my mind, than a Democratic one," replied the Judge furtively glancing about him. "Seems funny to me that a Democrat would attack the only Democrat ever elected to congress from this district. Lontz's speech was a veiled attack on 'Fin' from start to finish." v - , "Mr. Lontz referred to the circulation of an anonymous circular In Cambridge City attacking men who are supporting Lontz. Do you know his purpose in referring to this matter?" the reporter questioned. ' "I don't know anything about that Cambridge City affair," answered the Judge. "I do know that the only opposition to Fin in this district is on the part, of some spoilsmen who didn't get what they went after." The Judge

then terminated the interview.

In his speech Lontz referred to the fact that certain party workers had been engaged in an attempt to picture him as an enemy to the working man. "I was hardly expecting the subject to be first brought up in a Connersville newspaper," Lontz remarked. : He said he had been informed that a certain postmaster in a Wayne county town had recently made a pilgrimage to Richmond to tell "how hard I am on the laboring man.". He said he did not see how any Wayne county postmaster at the present time could "leave his job long enough to eat or sleep, much less leave his post and go to another town to circulate malicious stories about a fellow Democrat whom he will have to vote for

Proper Way to Keep Your Hair in Curl

If you want your hair to grow and thrive, don't curl it with a hot Iron. The regular use of this barbarous instrument is bound to keep the hair dried and parched looking, with broken, uneven ends. It's a lot more sensible to adopt the simple silmerine method, which will not interfere in the least with the growth and health of t; e hair. - Moreover, it means a far rrre beautiful curly and wavy effect with no evidence of having been artificially-acquired. A few ounces of liquid silmerine which can of course be found In any drug store will last a long time. Just try a little of this harmless liquid tonight Dip a clean tooth brush into it and draw this down the full length of the hair. Silmerine, by the way, Is neither sticky nor greasy; you will be simply delighted with it. Adv.

this fall." This sally was greeted with applause and laughter.

He added that men who bad never

in their Uvea paid a dollar of wages

to a working man should not be the

first to criticise him. i

Lontz pointed out that there were boys in his shop earning $2.60 a day

and that the two local lawnmower factories paid fifteen per cent higher wages than any other factories of the kind in the world. He invited any one to visit his factory to learn from his employes-and from bis books, the treatment he has accorded his men and the wages be has paid them. ' In concluding his address Lontz displayed a copy of an anonymous circular distributed in Cambridge City recently. In part this reads: ' "The two men at the head of and leading the opposition to Gray in Wayne county, are men who have failed to receive post office appointments at Cambridge City and Richmond. i "Jack Harper was an applicant, with five or six others, ' for the post office at Cambridge City. Gray made an inquiry among the patrons and Democrats : and - recommended Mr. Straughn, the Democrat favored by the people. . Mr. Harper is now at the head of the organization opposing Gray in Wayne county. '.. "R. O. Allen was an applicant with many others for- the Richmond post office. After malting an investigation Gray recommended Mr. Beck, he being found to be the choice of the patrons and Democrats. Mr. Allen has

now opened headquarters In Richmond and Is managing the opposition to Gray in that city." ; In referring to this Lontz said: "A few nights " ago such bills as these were shoved under doors In Cambridge City. This Is an anonymous article. Its author was too big a coward to sign his name to it. It ' Impugns the names of two of my supporters, two faithful Democrats. It seems to Intimate that any opposition to Mr. Gray, now serving his third term, is nothing short of sacrilege. I hope I won't, have to refer to this again. Cant we Democrats fight fairly with each other. Things like this
