Lewis' Mighty Club Drives Pill in Net Taking Local five BY FRANK DUN I NO. Rivaling his mighty deeds in tht old Western, during the palmy day ' of '02, '03 and '04, Eddie "Tad" Lewis,' sliver-thatched veteran rush ofjtha i : Indianapolis pole combine, practically alone and single-handed defeated the Richmond aggregation of club wielders, 7 to 6, In one of the prettiest and speediest polo offerings of the Mason at tns Coliseum last night. Coming from behind, after the Quakers had garnered a lead that , wis considered impassable . by Quaker followers, the Capital City crew, ' with Lewis at the helm, staged one of the most remarkable "garrisons"
DEAR STORY, SAYS LAVSON IS SICK
f recorded en the local Hnk. Quakers Start Fust. . ; From tbe first minute of play Richmond had appeared a certain winner. The. Quakers started the game with lots: of fireworks and had an account of three on the score sheet before Indianapolis had started perspiration. And then came the deluge in the shape of the veteran Ted Lewis upon whom it had appeared that the hand of old Father Time was beginning to press too heavily, Who started to play Just thirteen minutes and . seven sec onds after the start of the initial period. And he played sixty seconds of every minute of the game thereafter. Bit of the seven-goal totals registered by the Indian combine were donations off the club of the speedy rush. Lewis' drives last night were terrific, his
pass work was perfect, his old-time generalship and cunning never better. He was the Whole team. Richmond 8cores Three. The game, as per custom, started with Richmond taking things with a rush. Just one minute and fifty sec-
-onds after start of play, Sox Quigley, copping a pass from his brother, Lou, slipped the sphere past Artie and the excitement was oft. ThA Walt Evans took a hand. A. drive' from the middle of the floor and another from the north wainacotting registered two more for the Quakers. ' Just as a means of keeping Interest up, Ted Lewis got busy at this point of the battle. One of his old-time angle drives the kind that makes the name of Lewis feared by every goaltender in the business-whetted tbe first marker for the Invaders. ; Gaining a little cork during the intermission, following close on the initial stania, Lewis came back strong" in the second frame. After some of the hardest kind of scrapping on the part of both teams, Lewis knotted the score at a trio apiece. Quigleys Come Back. With the lead threatened, Richmond braced. Goals by O. Quigley and Lou Quigley gave them a margin on the score sheet. Sox scored an in-and-out. Following up his solid swipe, fooled Mays for a goal that remained in the folds. Lou Quigley's score was the termination of a brilliant bit of individual work. A few seconds before the close of the second round Lewis drove a high one at Jimmy O'Metz. The sphere thumbed James on the arm, dropped
to the floor and rolled through the Quaker goaltend's flops. Score at the close of the period: Quakers, 5; Indiana, 4. The final session was one revelation of speed, th term spaed meaning mostly Lewis. The tow-headed offensive star of the visitors, with assistant Freddie Long, attached the clamps this period. Long scored first for the marker that evened the count at five all. Sox Quigley romped to the fore with the donation that gave the Quakers a lead of one goal. A banked shot and Ted Lewis had the chance to tie the score. He did. Looks Like Overtime. With the score six all two minutes before close of regulation time, it ap
peared that the battle would lapse into an extra-session affair. Defensive departments of both clubs were working overtime, and neither team appeared to have any decided advantage in the scoring line. And then the unexpected, in the shape of the veteran Lewis loomed to the fore. From scrimmage. Long shot the pellet to Lewis. With Evans and Griffith covering Quaker territory, Lewis worked both men for a faked shot at O'Metz. The feint fooled Jimmy, and Lewis, hooking from an angle, shot the sphere into the Quaker pen. That ended it. Line-up and summary: Indianapolis (7) Richmond (6) Long L. Quigley First Rush. Lewis O. Quigley Second Rush. Harold Evans Center. Lyons Griffith Halfback. Mays O'Metz Goal. NEW YORK, Jan. 27. Eva TangUay is to give up vaudeville to become a musical comedy star. She will begin a long tour. Feb. 14.
Outside the Richmond high school basketball five, Hagerstown H. S. quintet appears to be the strongest nigh school team 1ft Wayne county today. This year's H. H. S. representative team is considered the best turned
out of the Jefferson township schools in years. The team has made a record of nine games won out of eleven played so far this, season. Games lost this season were dropped to Richmond one game to Fairmount and one to Carthage. Hagerstown's defeat of Fairmount, 17 to 13, gives an idea of the strength of the team. Personnel of this year's team includes a number of men who will be available for the team next year. The present varsity is composed of Johnnie Sherry and Walt Witcherman, forwards; Gilbert Foyst, canter; William Walts and Lawrence Mohler, guards.
