Sixty thousand dollars in sixty minutes, an
average of $1,000 a minute. This represents the response of Cincinnati Jews to an appeal for aid for their war-stricken countrymen in Poland,
Russia, and Galicia. In New, York and Chicago, members of the race have contributed heavy
amounts for the relief of Jews.
" Ties of 1)lood are strong, and racial instincts
and attachments are not destroyed in one or two
generations. Jews in America have not forgotten the countries from which they came. 'Their
response shows their relatives and countrymen
still hold a place in their memories.
Sad News For Housewife. New York dispatches state that the beef pack
ers of Chicago have bought up 40,000,000 pounds
of cold storage poultry in an alleged scheme to
corner the market. Prices are said to be 20 per
cent higher now than they were a year ago, and the backers of the corner expect to make a 40 per cent gain. If the Rrfme goes through the
price of roasting chicks per pound next , sum
mer may be in the neight ox hood of 40 cents. I This will be depressing news for the housewife." , Visions of Sunday chicken dinners next summer have been rudely shattered, and roast beef or pork may be the substitute. Amateur chicken raisers ought hail the joyful
tidings with delight, for it means money to them -if the eggs hatch and the chicks mature.
Hints by Thrifty Men. If you wish your children to be thrifty, I
would beg of you to impress upon them the criminality of waste.
Thrift is the surest and the strongest founda
tion of an empire so sure, so strong and so necessary that no great empire can long exist and disregard it.
Lord Rosebury.
The thrifty maxim of the wary Dutch is to
save all. the money they can touch.
Industry, Perseverance and Frugality make
Fortune yield.
Light Gains, heavy Purses. As Pride increases, Fortune declines. 'Beware of Jittle Expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship. .-. : V A light purse is a heavy curse. i ' No gains without pains. Necessity never made a good bargain.
If you know how to spend less than you get
you have the philosophers stone. Diligence is the mother of good luck. God helps them that help themselves.
Buy what :jthou hast no need of, and e'er long
thou shalt sell thy necessities.
Rather go to bed supperless than run in debt
for a breakfast. An empty, bag cannot stand upright. . ' Be always ashamed to catch thyself idle. - Poor Richard's Almanack.

Thrift is mainly at the bottom of all improve
ments. Without it no railroads, no canals, no ships, no telegraphs, no churches, no universities, no schools, no newspapers, nothing great or costly could we have. Man must exercise thrift and save before he can produce anything material of great value. There was nothing built, no great progress made, as long as man remained a thriftless savage. i ; Andrew Carnegie.
At Movies Tonight
PALACE. One of the most remarkable film stories ever produced by the Vitagraph company, and but recently completed by George D. Baker, is entitled "A Price for Folly' at the Palace tonight, is one of the most powerfully dramatic Blue Ribbon features. When Mr. Baker first received the manuscript, he had instructions to produee it in one part of a thousand feet, with
thirty-five scenes. No less than three people lost their lives In the original
short story. LYRIC.
One of the great laws of life is that
the good shall be in constant conflict
with the evil. If it were otherwise the evil would predominate and the walls of the house of civilization would
topple over on us and end In our ex
termination. In the Gold Seal three-
reel drama, "The reward of Chivalry,'
at the Lyric tonight, with Herbert
Rawllnson, we have this great con flict faithfully shown
The Lyric Is also showing the sixth
installment of the thrilling Graft se
rial, which was suggested by the well-
known novelist, James Oppenheim, and was written by Hugh C. Weir and Joe Brandt. It exceeds in excitement all the previous episodes which have already established a record for mov- . lng picture serials. This episode tells a gripping story of the attempt of corrupt railway magnates.
YES, HE KNEW PEARL. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 27 Clar-
ence Fetty was sipping his beer very complacently when he heard a bunch
of gents down the bar a ways speak
ing of Pearl. "Well, how is Pearl, I used to go with her?" said Fetty. The answer was a concentrated attack by Henry Bittner, Pearl's husband, and
four or five of his near relatives and friends he had been drinking with.
And on top of all that Fetty hauled to the police station.

Try the Children's Medicine.
Many parents are inclined to believe that medicine used for children Is not suitable for themselves. While it is true that larger doses are required, it is unreasonable to suppose that a disease in an adult should be treated any differently than the same ailment in a child. Mrs. Earl Jennings, Lima. Ohio, writes, "Chamberlain's Cough Remedy Is a splendid medicine for children. I have used it myself for colds and it has always given me the desired relief." Obtainable everywhere. adv.

Vegetable calomel, extract of the Toot ax the old-fashioned may-apple plant, does not salivate. Asm fiver stimulator, it's great. It's a per. feet substitute for ordinary calomel (mercury); in fact, it's better, because its action is gentle instead of severe and irritating and it leaves no mean, disagreeable aftereffects. Physicians recognize this and prescribe mavrapple root (podophyUin, they call it) daily. Combined with four other standard, all-vegetable remedies, mayapple root may now be had at most any druggist's in convenient sugarcoated tablet form by asking for Sentanel Laxatives. If you forget the name, ask for the box that has thepicture of the soldier on it. These tablets are small, easy to take and are really wonderful little performers.
