The Pledge of the S. S. I. A. Last evening the South Side Improvement association pledged itself to increased activity in
behalf of the city, a more sincere devotion- to pivic duty, and further enterprise in the promo
tion of the city's welfare.
f Alfred Bavis, member of the board of works,
presented a motto which the association adopted. It reads as follows: "I pledge to my city a more complete understanding of her problems, a more liberal concep
tion of her limitations, a more hopeful attitude toward her possibilities, a more generous contribution to her needs and a more adtive participation
in the broader functions of her citizenship in order
that my city may become a greater credit to her
self, to Indiana, to America and to -God, because
of my having lived in Richmond.
These sentiments comprise the full duty of a
citizen toward his city. The South Side Improve
ment association, worker of much good in Richmond, thus far, is to be complimented on adopting such a lofty conception of duty as its motto
and of dedicating itself to so high a purpose.
Every citizen of this community might do Well to clip the South Side Improvement associa
tion's motto and ponder it long and hard.
creased mortality is that mankind stays cooped
up in houses, gets little exercise, breaths little fresh air and as a j result germs "multiply in homes,' the human system becomes enervated and
is unable to fight disease when the attack comes.
Richmond is. suffering from an epidemic of sh -a 'aft a .. 9 - A
grip, me Dest cure ior tnis maiaay is io go home, stay in bed, call in a doctor, and remain in bed until the ailment has been cured.
One way- to fight grip, pneumonia and other
winter diseases is to take long walks in the open, breathe plenty of fresh air, and keep the body fit
to meet every attack of the DISEASE FOE.
Skating is recommended as one of the best
forms of exercise in winter. It has become a craze in many cities. Physicians say it is a good craze and ought to remain the one permanent craze of the winter season.
Thirty-One Compensation Laws. Workmen's compensation laws are operating in 31 of the United States, according to the recent bulletin of the bureau of labor statistics at Washington. While amounts of compensation benefits vary slightly, it is apparent that makers bf these laws based them' on substantially the same ground. The plan of administering the laws divides the states into two groups. Ohio, jYyoming and Washington practically require insurance in the state fund. The other states, Which include Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Montana, Colorado, ' California,
Minnesota, Arizona, Nevaka, Oregon,' Alaska and Hawaii, practically require compensation and supervise the administration of it, but leave the
employer the right, with certain safeguards, to
provide it.
Can You Answer These Questions? College boy$ are ignorant of the war. Pro
fessors in New York university, Bowdoin college and an institution of the middle west have just
put to their pupils a list if simple questions which' any well-informed person should be able to answer and the result is inglorious and almost uniform failure. Can you do better ? Here are the questions: Where is GaUipoli? What is the capital of Bulgaria? What countries bound Serbia? In what country is Saloniki? On what sea is Montenegro? Who is in command of the French army? Who is the prime minister of England? Who is Bethman-Hollweg? Who is Poincare ? Who is Briand? Who is Venizelos?
Who is von Hindenburg?
Who is General French? Who is Sir Edward Grey? Who is Viviani? Name, with the proper title, the ruler of Ger
many.
Name the ruler of Greece. Name the ruler of Italy. Name the ruler of Bulgaria. Name the ruler of Russia. The New York university students had an average rating of fifty-eight per cent on this test. Out of fifty-nine students none answered all the inquiries correctly, while only three obtained a grade above 90 per cent.

Endorsing Vocational Training.
The semi-annual meeting of the Indiana State
Conference-of Typographical Unions at Terre
rlaute this week endorsed the vocational training
courses offered in the schools of Indiana. The Typographical union is one of the strongest and most influential ones. in the United States. Its advocacy of vocational training indicates that its members realize that the boys in the state's Schools must be trained thoroughly to become Competent workers.
Keeping Fit.
The. death rate in the winter months is the
highest of the year. The reason for the
in-
Old Age and the War. In the British army, the commanding gener
als are younger than in either the German or French armies. Sir Douglas Haig, commander-
in-chief, is 54; General Rawlison is 51; General
Plumer 58 ; General Pultney 54.
These figures are in striking contrast to the ages of the commanding leaders in the German
army. Field Marshal von Hindenburg is 68, and General on Mackensen is 66. With the exception of Falkenayn, chief of the general staff, who is 54, there is not a commanding general under 60 years in a position of first importance. The German average is about ten years above the British. In the French army, you will find that General Joffre is 63 years, General Foch about 60, General Pau is 67 and Gallieni is one of the veterans of the "tO. Compare these ages with the young men who fought big engagements in former wars: Wellington fought his last battle at 46, Ney at 45, Nelson at 47, Alexander the Great was only 33 when he died, Napoleon was 46 at Waterloo, and Hannibal 46 when he was defeated by Scipio.

Editor Palladium:
Much has been said about the mo
torized rural route system of Wayne county. The cause of the present condition of the service la placed. on the shoulders of some of the higher officials. Not 'arguing that point let It
remain as it is. When the motorized
rural route was about to be established and the announcement made by
the post office authorities that -the department would hold an examination to secure carriers to fill the positions quite a number of soft snap hunters put in their applications and took the examination In regular form. About 98 per cent of these soft snap hunters had dreams of nothing but good old summer time, good roads and noth
ing to do but rake in $150 per month:
and take an automobile ride each day
for exercise. A man might be mental
ly strong enough and have will power
ty of good help and the result Is they get the mall out each day. A PATRON. Greensfork. Ind. PLAN 8TATE WORK OF SUNDAY SCHOOLS
