KIDNEY CURES SEIZED EY U. S.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 21. Action against - several so-called "kidney cures" has recently been taken under toe Food and Drugs Act by the United States department of agriculture. In

one case the shippers of a preparatlon labeled as "A Sure Cure For Rl&drlor and Kirlnev Trmihle" were

prosecuted on the charge of falsely and fradulently misbranding the product. They pleaded guilty and were fined $25 and costs by the court. This particular kidney "cure" waB

' found to contain over 41 per cent, of alcohol. It was labeled "Old Jim ' Fields Phosphate Dill and Gin. Mankind's Greatest Friend, A Sure Cure for Bladder and -Kidney Trouble. It is also a Great Aid in Case of Urinary Trouble. Allenberg & Meister, Sole Agents, Memphis, Tenn." An analysis ; of the product showed that it contained no material amount of either ' din or phosphate. In another case 48 bottles of

"Stuart's Buchu and Juniper Compound," prepared by the Stuart Manu-

, facturlng company, Atlanta, Georgia, '" were seised. The court issued a de

cree of condemnation, forfeiture and destruction on the ground that the claims upon the label were misleading, false, and fraudulent. According to the medical experts of ; the department, alcohol Is a kidney irritant and Is dangerous in many cases of kidney disease. For this reason many physicians advise their patients who suffer from any kind of kidney or bladder trouble to abstain from the use of alcohol even in moderate quantities.

LONDON, Dec. 21.- Farmers all over England are; complaining of the shortage of labor, which makes it utterly impossible for them to get even the absolutely necessary winter work done on their farms. They declare that the acreage in wheat will be considerably smaller next year than this. Troubles, they say, began when Premier Asquith announced that all young men would be forced into military service if a sufficient number of recruits were not forthcom

ing in answer to Lord Derby's call last month. Immediately afterward there was a general rush for the recruiting offices, with most fatal results to farming. : ; ' '.'.. L -, .
