FOUNTAIN CITY FIVE LOSES ONE OF TEN

The Fountain City basketball team

has played ten games this season and

have been defeated only once, tnen by a two point margin. They defeated

the fast Camden team on their own

floor on Dec. 17, with a score of 26-16.

Christmas day they have a double header booked with the Richmond Owls and expect to win both as the Owls have not played any games this season and have had little practice. During the holidays Fountain City has a trip planned through the central part of the state meeting some of the fastest teams in that section.

MEET MUNGIE AGAIN

MAY GALL OFF CARD AS EAGLES USE HALL

Tonight the Richmond polo team goes to Muncie to try conclusions with old rivals. The result of the game is being anticipated with anxiety by Richmond fans for Muncie has added great strength to its five in the person of Kid Williams and if they win the game they will have the locals tied on the .series and that's just what they are anxious to do.

C A. gymnasium Thursday afternoon have been named, and they will judge the work 'of the eighty high school boys who have entered the various events. Other faculty men will assist.

NORTON TAKES COUNT.

As predicted yesterday Jack Dillon had little difficulty in stopping Al. Norton whom he had defeated twice before. Norton took the count in four rounds at Memphis, Tenn., last night and it is not likely that he will want any more of Dillon's game unless the price is pretty high.

TOURNAMENT OPENS.

A bowling tournament for doubles and singles is now in progress at the "Y" bowling alleys and any person is eligible to enter. The tournament will close on Jan. 1, and suitable prizes will be awarded the winner.

The Bankers went up against the Pheggs at the "Y". alleys last night and added to their Christmas fund by taking two out of three games. While the Pheggs played their best, the Bankers, flushed with Christmas funds and confidence, managed to nose out. Summary: Bankers. Player 1st. 2d. 3d. Total Av. PARIS, Dec. 21 Successful results from the operations of the French artillery are announced in the war office statement which admits that the French troops have evacuated a position on the north bank of the Ainse after holding it for three days.

Whether or not there will be a boxing match on New Year's day is problematical. After getting in touch with the boxers and receiving their signed contracts Manager Benson was informed by the board of directors of the Eagles club yesterday afternoon that he could not have the use of the hall on New Year's day ' and as there is no other available place in which to hold the bouts it looks as though they would have to be called off. Terry. Nelson .and Arthur. Stigall as well .as Frankie Mason and Sammie Sandow of Cincinnati, had signed contracts to appear here but the bouts will have to be postponed unless Benson can secure another hall. The Eagles have open house for their members on New Year's day and will use the hall.

OFFICIALS MEASURE , ACTIONS CAREFULLY IN BRIDGE MATTER

QUINTET STOPS OFF AT STATE CAPITAL

As previously announced the game between the local high school basketball team and the Connersville five scheduled for next Friday night has been called off so the local boys will not be seen on the floor until the New Year dawns. Sunday night they leave on their week's barnstorming trip. Two or three days "will be. spent in Indianapolis where the boys have been offered the use of the Y. M. C. A. gymnasium and every arrangement possible for their comfort and enjoyment of the trip has been made by Coach Nohr and Manager Charles Towle.

"KID" LONG UMPIRES GAME FROM STANDS

"Kid" Long of Charleston, W. Va., who plays polo with tha Indianapolis five, which bucks against Richmond tomorrow night at the Coliseum, ..was an umpire iu the baseball world a few seasons ago and had many queer experiences. Perhaps one of the unniest stories told about the "Kid" happened when he umpired a game between Charleston and Chillicothe. The "Kid" was going good and his decisions were fair but the crowd kept riding him and he got sore. While the teams were swapping sides in the fifth inning, Long walked over and took a seat in the. bleachers. There was no umpire on the field. As the first batter stepped to the plate one of the bleacherites asked Long how he expected to umpire the game from where he was sitting. Long replied, "Well, you fellows have been doing it, why can't I?" and he finished the game from that position.

In addition to the political complication which Mordecai Doddridge, president of the county commissioners, and William Cheesman will have to face at the primaries in April, the Main street bridge problem, which is gradually taking shape, will undoubtedly be an issue. No definite action has been taken on building a new bridge, although It Is generally understood that this will be necessary and the commissioners realizing this, as well as the county council, appropriated money for a temporary bridge, which would hardly have been necessary if the bridge could have been repaired. None of the commissioners will commit themselves on the building of a new bridge. County Commissioner Anderson, whose office expires the first of the year, has been anxious to have the question brought to focus. He was anxious to have all definite arrangements mde so that the contract for a new bridge could be let. The other commisr-ioners, however, did net agree with him and say that there is no hurry. Both Doddridge and Cheesman are candidates for re-election and are measuring every step taken toward the determination of what action to take regarding the Main street bridge, which at the least, will cost the taxpayers $175,000.

ANCIENT WEAPONS USED IN TRENCHES

LONDON, Dec. 21. There has been an unepected revival of ancient weapons in this war, Elizabethan helmets, grenades of William' Ill's time, and Roman catapults for trenches. Murderous bowie knives have also been recommended for underground fighting, but it is not generally known that the grenadiers and bayonet men of the bombing squads are takin; to the Kaffir knobkerrie.
